the $4,000 general fund savings to Mt. Gideon, but with no promise for future
years.

Members of the City Council and the School Board
held their brown bag
lunch on Wednesday, March 21. Ellen Bern, Stefany Brot, Tom Peters, Mike
Miller, Dr. James Victory and Bob Wagner attended. A general discussion
commenced relating to tax issues, ordinances and development in U-City
business districts and the status of the joint meetings. The group decided not to
hold any more lunch meetings. A social hour is scheduled for Tuesday, April 24,
from 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM in the City Hall Rotunda for representatives of the
School District and City Hall.

Arts and Letters CommissionReturning Artist
The enjoyed a very successful
series
with David Harris, UCHS Class of 1976. The series culminated in a
reception Thursday night. Mr. Harris performed at the reception and shared his
vision for music education in University City Schools. He spoke eloquently
regarding the exceptional opportunities provided to him in the district, which
helped mold his success. He also spoke passionately about the need to revive
music programming from the third grade forward, not just as an outlet for the arts
but also as a comprehension tool in other subject areas. We are fortunate to
have so many talented artists in our community. I hope to receive advice on how
to create a “master’s series” to create additional mentoring interaction for our
students. The Commission is host to the City Photo Show and the Sculpture
Photo Show
Series, which are approaching fast. The will be held from 2 PM to
th
Sculpture
4 PM in the Library on Saturday, April 7 in the U-City Library. The
series
will kick off with a reception in Centennial Commons at 2:30 PM Sunday,
April 1. The citizen volunteers on the Arts and Letters Commission bring these
events and many others to you; please remember to express your appreciation
for their ongoing commitment to U-City and public art.

Great Rivers Greenway
is moving forward with planning on the Centennial
Greenway. Washington University is collaborating with GRG to engineer and
fund the enhancements at Melville. Options are being considered for the east
and west side of the street. They are planning a public meeting at City Hall in
April to review options with their planning firm, Civitas. Representatives of LSBD,
Ames Place and Parkview subdivisions will receive direct notice, but all U-City
residents will be welcome to attend. In addition, GRG secured funding to
complete the stretch along Olive Blvd. from I-170 to McKnight when the
bridgework is complete. Both enhancements will be exciting additions for
pedestrians in U-City.

Loop Special Business District Update:

1. There has been a growing desire to protect the character of the unique
dining and shopping experience in the Loop. In order to protect character the
merchants are exploring the idea of establishing a balance or ratio concerning
