<br />RESOLUTION 2007 - 4 <br /> WHEREAS <br /> Harriett Friedman Woods was a long-time resident of the City of <br />University City; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> she first began her political career with her election in April 1967 to <br />the City Council of University City, representing Ward 2; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> she continued her political career at the state level, holding office as <br />an appointee to the State Transportation Commission and then elected in 1976 as State <br />Senator from District 14; and <br />WHEREAS <br /> Harriett Woods played a significant role on the City Council and <br />throughout her life in achieving a stable community that opened its arms to people of all <br />races and walks of life; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> she subsequently became the first woman and the second person of <br />the Jewish faith in Missouri to be elected to Missouri’s second highest executive <br />position, Lieutenant Governor of Missouri in 1984; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> she used her personal experience to become a mentor for other <br />woman candidates and as President of the National Women’s Political Caucus <br />encouraged women throughout the U.S. to step into the political arena; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> she worked passionately to aid society’s most vulnerable – the <br />elderly, minorities, and the homeless; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> Harriett Woods fought hard to obtain equal opportunities for women <br />in government and business; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS <br /> she was a featured speaker at the 1992 Democratic National <br />Convention and was named by President William Clinton as the head of the Coalition <br />for Women’s Appointments; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS <br /> Harriett Woods selflessly gave of her time and energy to the people <br />she represented, the women she mentored, and the city, state and country she served; <br /> NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED <br /> that this Council declares June 2, 2007, <br />will be Harriett Woods Day in University City, a day of recognition on what would have <br />th <br />been her 80 birthday for a woman who found joy in being a true public servant. <br />th <br /> Adopted this 26 day of February, 2007. <br /> <br /> Joseph Adams, Mayor <br /> <br />Joyce Pumm, City Clerk <br /> <br />
