The City of University City and the Sutter-Meyer Society are now finalizing details of a
long-term lease for the Society to use the building at a cost of $1.00/year, an
estimated annual savings of $8,000, the estimated cost to rent the Sutter-Meyer
farmhouse at current market conditions.

Project Benefits

The Sutter-Meyer Farmhouse Project has already been beneficial for our community
and will continue to be so. Already the project has:

?

brought together a diverse group of people to work to bring this farmhouse to
public attention;
?

though its work, helped the University City Council and staff to focus on the
future use of the building, keeping faith with the city’s designation of the
building as a city historic site in 1986;
?

focused professional attention on the physical needs of the building, so that it
does not deteriorate further.
In the future the project will:

?

bring residents and non-residents to the historic northern part of our city
to experience not only the farmhouse museum and educational center, but
the variety of the thriving Olive Boulevard;
?

be a central, accessible location for learning about University City history;
?

provide the School District of University City, and other districts, with a
centrally-located facility to be used as a focus of teaching in a number of
disciplines;
?

be supportive and protective of the work of the Mound City
Archaeological Society, work that would probably have to be stopped if the
building were sold to a private owner;
?

be a “kick-start” for other historic preservation and learning opportunities

in University City.
Goal of the Sutter-Meyer Farmhouse Project

The goal of the Sutter-Meyer Society is to renovate the Sutter-Meyer farmhouse into a
museum and educational center that will be THE place for people, residents and non-
residents, to learn about University City history. We also hope the Sutter-Meyer
farmhouse will be a place where the often untold history of the people, times and
K-1-e
places in the St. Louis suburbs will be shared.

September 24, 2007
