This project would not proceed without the successful partnership already developed between the City of University City and the Sutter-Meyer Society. The SMS has also already developed a relationship with the Mound City Archaeological Society, another group working toward the same goal of increasing public awareness of our historical resources. The SMS will be doing a charette for strategic and interpretive planning with the Missouri Humanities Council. We have an on-going relationship with the School District of University City, which provides meeting space for our group. The Historian for the St. Louis County Department of Parks and Recreation, Esley Hamilton, is a member of our Board of Directors. The SMS would like to be the catalyst for the formation of an on-going collaborative partnership with the operators of other historic homes and museums in the St. Louis region. We anticipate and understand that the success of our project will depend on our continued ability to obtain professional and financial support for the local business community. It is our hope that we will be a model for how other communities can work with local governments and organizations to further their preservation goals. Goal 5: Integrate historic preservation strategies into policy, planning, and routine procedures at all levels of Missouri government: local, regional and state. As mentioned above, we hope to be a model for how communities can work together to reach historic their historic preservation goals. If this relationship succeeds as we expect it will, we will work with University City to spread the word about how this type of partnership can and should happen. University City has already acknowledged, through its support, that the work of the SMS is consistent with the city’s support for historic preservation efforts, as set forth in the newly-revised 2005 Comprehensive Plan.
