<br />Resolution 2007 - 12 <br /> <br />Resolution for University City resident and Former State Representative Betty L. <br />Thompson naming the walking trail around Millar Park in her honor. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br />she represented part of St. Louis County (District 72) in the Missouri <br />House of Representatives has been a role model and example for many. <br /> <br />st <br />WHEREAS, <br /> she was the 1 African American female to be elected in University City and <br />st <br />Women League of Cities, 1 to be elected as Democratic by the Republican Majority as Vice- <br />Chairman of the Ethics Commission. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> she served as Majority Whip for the Missouri State House of Representatives. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br />she is a member of the following organizations: NAACP; Better Family Life; <br />president, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. Louis Support Group; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. <br />Commission; past president, Women in Municipal Government; and past president, PTO. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> she has received numerous awards for her community involvement including: <br />Gwen Giles Award; Human Development Corporation of Metropolitan St. Louis (HDC) <br />Employee of the Year; 1979; Drum Major Peace Award by the Clergy Coalition; 1999 <br />Outstanding Legislative Mother of the Year Award from the Senate; KMOX and Suburban <br />Journal Women of Achievement Award; Ernest and DeVerne Lee Calloway Award; and the <br />1999 Martin Luther King Leadership Award from the St. Louis MLK Support Group. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br />she has been recognized by the River Front Times newspaper, 1999 Best of St. <br />Louis as Politician of the Year and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as one of the Outstanding <br />Women in Leadership. Betty Thompson was recently honored in Los Angeles, CA for her <br />many accomplishments in conjunction with the Miss Black USA Organization a non-profit <br />entity geared toward the holistic development and scholarship acquisition of African American <br />women. <br /> <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />UNIVERSITY CITY AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />The Walking Trail in Millar park shall from this point forward be named in honor of Former <br />State Representative Betty L Thompson in respect to her passion for University City and <br />Millar park specifically. <br /> <br /> <br />Adopted this __________day of ______________________2007. <br /> <br />_____________________________ <br />Joseph Adams <br />Mayor <br />Attest: <br />October 1, 2007 <br /> <br />
