Rechargeable batteries are commonly found in cordless power
tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, camcorders, digital cameras, and
remote control toys. RBRC recycles the following battery chemistries: Nickel Cadmium
(Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and Small Sealed Lead*
(Pb). RBRC is dedicated to keeping rechargeable batteries and cell phones out of our
nation’s solid waste stream and preserving natural resources.

Residents and visitors drop off rechargeable batteries and cell phones at NO charge in
rd
specially marked recycling boxes. Collection boxes are located on the 3 floor at City
Hall in the Public Works Department. There are more than 30,000 collection sites
nationwide. Please visit http://www.rbrc.org/call2recycle/index.html to find a drop-off
box near you. University City returns the postage paid box to RBRC. The rechargeable
batteries that power the cell phones are sent to a state-of-the-art facility where they are
recycled to reclaim reusable materials that are used in stainless steel production (nickel
and iron) and to make new batteries (cadmium). The cell phones are either refurbished
for reuse or recycled in an environmentally-sound manner.
