To: Honorable Mayor Adams and City Council

From: Julie Feier, City Manager

Date: January 18, 2008

Subject: Weekly Update

driving range
Good news, the bids for the came in under estimate. The overall cost of
the project will be reduced as well as the contribution needed from the County Park
Commission. The initial estimate for the total project was $370,420; the revised budget
based on bids is $331,652. The grant award will go down respectively from $255,000 to
$239,480. If all goes as planned, this will be the second grant we came in under budget
and were able to return funds to the Commission. The total allocation needed by the
City will be reduced to $52,172 due to a $10,000 contribution from the Harriett Woods
Foundation and the reduced bid amount. By creating additional revenue and promoting
play on our course, this exciting project will allow us to maintain and enhance our
course without continuing to deplete the City’s general revenue fund. The bids will be
on the January 28 consent agenda for approval.

More good news, Washington University staff notified Council Members Brot and
West
Wagner that the University attorneys reviewed the indentures and covenants of
Portland Place
, and due to the requirements limiting the parcels to single-family homes
with two stories, no development will take place beyond the current commercial corner.
Any change to the covenants requires 100% agreement of all owners.

middle school basketball
Not such good news, due to low enrollment for (6 boys total
thththththth
registered in the 6, 7 & 8 grades; 3 girls in the 6 & 7 grades and 1 girl in the 8
thth
grade), Recreation had to cancel the 6 – 8 grade basketball leagues. Play was to
begin on January 5, 2008. We needed at least 32 to 40 kids in each group in order to
field four teams. Over 1,200 flyers/registrations were distributed twice to all of the public
grade schools as well as the U -City parochial schools and private schools (Agape). The
information has been in the last two recreation brochures and on channel 10. The
lighted sign out in front of Centennial Commons has had the youth league information
up for the last three weeks. Staff worked with the University City School District Athletic
Director and other teachers and administrators about the youth league, yet we were still
