Ms. Brot requested action from staff concerning Washington University at the Olive
Skinker interchange. It was pointed out at the U City in Bloom meeting that it was
extremely dangerous with the method used to water the flowers at the modern lions
at Skinker and Olive. Ms. Brot recommended Washington University use an
irrigation system for watering instead of stretching a bulky hose across the street.
Another reminder was the Arts & Letters Commission Sculpture Series at Centennial
Commons with a reception April 6 at 2:00 p.m. She encouraged everyone to
exercise their rights and vote on April 8. Finally Ms. Brot wanted to go on record of
requesting the Council use the available metal detector on Council meeting nights.
She also encouraged Council to read the material received on the Gatesworth
expansion request, with consideration of the additional revenue the project has and
will continue to provide University City.
Mr. Wagner noted the recognition of the LEED certification University City received
in the renovation of the City Hall. He stated that it had been the persistence of
Councilmembers Shelley Welsch, Francine Brungardt, Stefany Brot and himself that
backed the LEED certification requirements in the City Hall renovation.
Mr. Glickert discussed the letter sent by the Superintendent and President of the
School Board of University City stating that the University School Administration
would not accept the suggested City liaison, Assistant City Manager Petree
Eastman, as a non-voting member at the School Board meetings. Secondly the
letter from the Superintendent went on to state that any information the City
generates or derives should be filtered through the School Board in the future. Mr.
Glickert wanted it to be known that he is against the Superintendent’s denial of
Council having a non-voting seat at the School Board meetings, as he felt that any
information the City has which is germane to improving the schools that would make
this a better community should not have to be filtered. He stated that they would be
the last ones he would have filter anything as displayed by their publication called
“Pride” laden with misspelled words and sentence run-ons. Mr. Glickert left the
“Pride” with the City Clerk for the record.
Mr. Glickert and Ms Ricci expressed their thanks for the meeting Olivette City
Council arranged for both Councils and expressed an interest in continuing these
meetings and also with other surrounding communities.
Mr. Price reinforced Mr. Glickert’s comment on the need for the City to make sure
things go better with the school system by working jointly together. He then
encouraged everyone to come to the Budget Hearing on April 14, 2008.
Mr. Wagner stated that the time has come when the City needs to be frank and open
about the City’s opinions of the University City School District because they so
impact the image of the City.He also agreed that there should not be a censorship
of any of the ideas the City would proposed.
Mayor Adams said the next Council meeting would be April 7, 2008 with a Study
Session on Fire Department Consolidation before the meeting.
