Janet Watson
Congratulations to Deputy City Manager, who was awarded the Missouri
City/County Managers Association (MCMA) statewide “Outstanding Assistant Award” at
their recent conference in Branson. Both Julie Feier and her former City Manager at the
City of Webster Groves jointly nominated her. Kudos from all of her friends and
colleagues!

“Where We
The East-West Gateway Council of Governments has recently updated its
Stand
” statistics about the St. Louis Region and finds that growth is “slow but steady”.
thth
From 2005 to 2007, St Louis went from the 27 fastest growing region to the 25, due
to falling growth in LA and Miami. However, St. Louis still lags behind its closest peers
Kansas City, Louisville, Cincinnati and Memphis in growth. A copy of the update is
attached.

The smell of honeysuckle isn’t so sweet after all. The Missouri Botanical Gardens has
Bush Honeysuckle
advised that has actually become an environmental hazard.
Infestation destroys urban biodiversity insofar as the Bush Honeysuckle depletes soil
moisture and nutrients; releases toxins that result in higher densities of disease carrying
ticks and mice; the fruit is less nutritive than native berries for migrating birds; and forest
trees have reduced growth and productivity when surrounded by an understory of
honeysuckle. In other words, it is our kudzu. Thus, County Executive Charlie Dooley
recently proclaimed that Bush Honeysuckle be removed and eradicated. Moreover, a
consortium of governmental and non-governmental organizations has been formed to
combat this and other invasive plants in our shared environment called the Gateway
Cooperative Weed Management Group (CWMA). As you may know, all polls must be staffed with equal numbers of
Republicans and Democrats and so, in University City (more than generally democratic)
there is a greater need for Republicans to volunteer. Regardless of persuasion,
volunteers are needed. To volunteer you must be a registered voter in St. Louis County
and declare a political party preference. These are also PAID positions:
Supervisors’ election day pay is $130 and training pay of $50 per hour for 3 to
?
3 ½ hours;
Assistant Supervisors earn $115 on election day and $65 per hour for 4 to 4 ½
?
hours of training; and
Poll workers earn $100 on Election Day and $30 per hour for 2-2 ½ of training.
?
To obtain an application form call Kathy Toth at 615-1965 or Lori Wrobel at 615-1840.

U City Lions Vintage Base Ball
The team will play a double header against the St.
Louis Perfectos in Lafayette (Square) Park in St. Louis this Saturday, May 17 at 1:00
pm.
