To: Honorable Mayor Adams and Council

From: Julie Feier, City Manager

Date: September 11, 2008

Subject: Weekly Update

At the upcoming Greater St. Louis Area Fire Chief Association awards luncheon,
Assistant Chief Miner, Captain Meyers, FF Rump, FF Herrick and FF Ketcherside
will receive Bronze Medals and Chief Olshwanger will receive a Certificate of
Merit
for their outstanding efforts in during the Maplewood fire and shooting on July 21
of this year.

Concerns were raised during the FY ’09 budget process regarding perceived waste in
the City’s compensation practices. In order to respond to Council concerns staff offered
to provide a thorough benefit assessment of surrounding municipalities. Each year the
City compares employee salaries to surrounding communities in order to remain
competitive in both recruitment and retention of our employees. Benefits have
historically been far more difficult to measure and rarely summarized. The good news is
we are clearly not being wasteful by any definition. However, you will find there are
areas we could tighten up and others we could consider expanding. The background
benefit assessment study session
for the is attached. The session will begin at 6:30
PM in the EOC room. Unfortunately, at least two Council Members will be unable to
attend. However, I intend to move forward with the session and we can arrange for
subsequent meetings if necessary. If you would prefer alternate arrangements please
let me know.

th
Loop on Sale
This weekend, Sat and Sun.
