elderly, given the growth in this age group and the need for more activity, and
persons with disabilities. Many bathrooms are still not accessible, playgrounds
that have bark or pebbles for cushioning are difficult to use for persons with
disabilities and would benefit from poured-in-place foam cushioning. Many
programs for those with Down syndrome end in the early teens, and it has been
suggested that we consider extending those programs through-out the teenage
years. It has been recommended that we set aside $2M annually for these types
of programs. We are also taking a look at the new ADA requirements and how
they will impact our parks. The law requires that this 50% for public safety, job
creation, and parks be spent according to an annual joint strategy, so it is subject
to annual review and adjustment. Information packet is provided.
On Thursday, Oct. 30 from 1 PM to 4 PM, the Community Action Agency of St. Louis
Job Fair
County (CAASTL) will host a at the Overland Community Center at 9225
Lackland Road. The closed section of I-64 from I-270
to I-170 will be reopened before the end of the year. The east half of the project, from I-
170 to Kingshighway, will close simultaneously with the west half opening. “Yesterday,
Gateway Constructors poured the last major stretch of the main driving lanes of I-64,
between Spoede Road and Lindbergh Boulevard. We are confident we can meet the
schedule of reopening the west end of I-64 by December 31 and we are pushing hard to
be ready as early as late November,” said Rahn. “All of us at MoDOT have been
impressed with Gateway Constructor’s work. They have accomplished this great
progress despite the rainiest year on record.” When I-64 reopens between I-270 and I-
170, it will close between I-170 and Kingshighway at the same time. The east half
closure will last through December 31, 2009. The switch from the west half of I-64 to
the east half will happen sometime between late November and New Year’s Eve. There
is still a lot of work to be completed before it is safe to open the new section of I-64. We
want to make sure it is safe to open and all of the interchanges will be ready to handle
the traffic. Much of the remaining work is weather dependent. Once we get closer, we
will provide a month’s notice of the date that the west half opens and east half closes.
Gateway Constructors will hold public meetings on October 15 and 16 to provide
information on the East Half construction work. The meetings will be held from 5-8 p.m.
The October 15 meeting is in the lower level of the St. Louis Science Center. The
October 16 meeting is at the Heights, Richmond Heights Community Center on Dale
Avenue.
