It has established as its mission the following:
The Mission of the Green Practices Committee of University City is to encourage
sustainable practices and programs that improve the health and quality of life of our
community, restore and protect our natural resources, and strengthen our economy. It is
widely recognized that there are local and global issues that threaten our ability to: meet
the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet
their own needs” . Therefore, it is imperative that we become sustainable as individuals,
as a City and as a community.
The Vision of the Committee is [that]:
There is a more sustainable way to live. The Green Practices Committee will propose
actions and steps for the community to take to enable us to fulfill our mission. Together
we will sustain ourselves.
In support of the Mission and Vision, the Committee further articulated the underlying
values:
We believe there is a connection between economic, environmental, and social well-
being. We believe we must be stewards of our community; therefore, this compels us to
use our knowledge to enhance the quality of life for future generations.
The Committee meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM at
Centennial Commons in Century Room 2.
The Committee requested that the City become a member ICLEI. ICLEI was founded in
1990 as the 'International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives'. The Council was
established when more than 200 local governments from 43 countries convened at our
inaugural conference, the World Congress of Local Governments for a Sustainable
Future, at the United Nations in New York. Known commonly as ICLEI or Local
Governments for Sustainability as they serve local governments through technical
assistance, resources, case studies, best practices and provide the software needed to
measure the carbon footprint of municipality. Our goal is to make deep reductions in
carbon emissions. The City is in the process of compiling the data to determine the
City’s baseline for emissions. In the coming years, the GPC will set measurable targets,
an emissions reduction strategy and finally evaluate the results. St. Louis City, Creve
Coeur, and Olivette are also members.
The SchoolDistrict will host a public meeting entitled Bridges Across Racial
Polarization
on Wednesday, January 28. The innovative program is sponsored by
FOCUS St. Louis designed to increase communication and understanding among
people of various racial and ethnic backgrounds. The meeting will be held from 6 PM
until 8 PM at the McNair Administration Building, 8136 Groby Road.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Botanic Garden has produced
Reduce Runoff: Slow It Down, Spread It Out, Soak It In
an on-line video, “,” that
highlights green techniques such as rain gardens, green roofs and rain barrels to help
