Council Agenda Item Cover
___________________________________________________________
MEETING DATE:
February 9, 2009
AGENDA ITEM TITLE:
Change of Street Name from Harvard Ave. to Sgt. Mike King Drive
AGENDA SECTION:
New Business
CAN THIS ITEM BE RESCHEDULED? :
No
BACKGROUND REVIEW:
In December 2008, the Public Works Department received a request for a street name change
from Harvard Avenue to Sgt Mike King as a way to posthumously honor 2008 Employee of the
Year, Sergeant Michael Richard King who died in the line of duty on October 31, 2008 after
serving the City for 25 years.
Only that part of Harvard that runs along the east side of City Hall from the north line of Delmar
Boulevard to a point 372 feet north thereof would be changed. This section of Harvard Avenue
is the only part that is publicly maintained and controlled by University City. The residential part
in University Heights Subdivision No. 1 would continue to be known as Harvard.
The abutting and affected property owners, the City of University City School District and
University City Public Library were notified of the proposed street name change. The University
Heights Subdivision was notified of the street name change. The St. Louis County Highways
and Traffic department was notified regarding the proposed street name change. No objections
were received.
The Community Development Department, the Police Department, the Fire Department, the St.
Louis County Department of Highways and Traffic, and the Department of Revenue, Land
Information Systems - Addressing, was contacted prior to the preparation of the street name
change, to check for duplication of street names and to address problems that would occur as a
result of the street name change. No objections were received.
Currently, there are no established procedures for street name changes within University City
mainly because the existing streets names have been well established for many years. Public
Works has drafted a procedure for street name change requests for the Traffic Commission’s
review and approval at its next meeting, February 12, 2009. Public Works will forward the
Traffic Commission’s recommendations to Council for any future street name change requests.
RECOMMENDATION:
Public Works recommends that the attached draft bill changing the name of part of Harvard to
Sgt. Michael King Drive be accepted and approved.
