RESOLUTION NO. ~~Ol/~r <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF INTENT <br />MITIGATION AND WORKING <br />RESISTANT COMMUNITY. <br /> <br />TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL-HAZARD <br />TOWARD BECOMING A DISASTER <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of University City recognizes that no community is immune from <br />natural hazards whether it be flood, severe weather, tornadoes, winter storms or earthquakes, <br />and they recognize the importance to its residents and to its businesses of enhancing its <br />ability to resist natural hazards, and the importance of reducing the human suffering, property <br />damage, interruption of public services and economic losses caused by those hazards; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of University City may have previously pursued measures such as <br />building codes, fire codes, floodplain management regulations, zoning ordinances, and storm <br />water management regulations to minimize the impact of natural hazards; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Federal Emergency Management Agency and the State Emergency <br />Management Agency have developed a program entitled "Hazard Mitigation" that assists <br />communities in their efforts to become Disaster Resistant Communities which are <br />sustainable communities after a natural disaster that focus, not just on disaster relief, but also <br />on recovery and reconstruction that brings the community to at least pre-disaster conditions <br />in an accelerated, orderly and preplanned manner; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of University City desires to commit to working with local schools, <br />businesses, non-for-profit organizations and government partners where appropriate; and <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF UNIVERSITY CITY AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Attest: <br /> <br />~ei'sha Meine-Forsythe <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br />SECTION 1. The City of University City will use its best efforts to become a disaster <br />resistant community by participating in hazard identification and risk assessment to <br />implement mitigation practices that can reduce vulnerability for residents and businesses. <br />Adopted this GqQ day of '"~'~ 2004. <br /> <br /> <br />
