Session 1723, Budget Study Minutes
May 13, 1998

10

Mr. Ollendorff said that the new pool time policy remains, so that the pool will
not close from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. any longer. Mr. Wagner thought it was just a
temporary trial period and no actual decision had been made. Mr. Ollendorff
said that he believed that the staff and Park Commission agreed to make it
permanent, but he will make sure and report back to him. Mr. Wagner just
wanted to make sure if it was reflected in the budget or not. Responding to Mr.
Schoomer, Mr. Ollendorff said that they know that some of the water loss is
from the main drain, so money will be added to replace the main drain line.
They do not know where all of the water loss is. Many of the pool's valves and
piping had been replaced in previous years. The water loss is way down from a
few years ago. Mr. Ollendorff asked Mr. Schoomer to look on page C-72 to item
725.04, Water, where the City is expected to use about $15,000 of water,
recalling that, five or six years ago, this figure was up to $40,000. Mr.
Ollendorff said that if we had no leaks, then the water bill would probably be
about $9,000 - $10,000. The leaks that are there now are probably in piping
that are underneath the whole pool, which would cost in excess of $100,000 to
dig up to put in new pipes. Mr. Lieberman asked about the shower area. Mr.
Ollendorff said that had all been f~xed. Mayor Adams said if it we ever had to
dig it up, then it would probably be the time to consider putting in a whole new
system or an aquatic center. Responding to Mr. Munkel, Mr. Ollendorff said
new main drain line would be replaced after this season, because they open in
two weeks.

35.70 RECREATION FACILITY:

No major changes are reported. Capital Outlay is way down, because the
building is basically done. An AB machine and a Treadmill will be added to the
exercise room. Responding to Mr. Munkel's question about the P.A. system,
Mr. Ollendorff explained that it would be for the swimming pool and the
recreation facility, which will be used for lifeguard instructions, etc. Mr.
Munkel said how it could be possible for the system to be aged enough to be
replaced now, when the facility is new. Mr. Ollendorff replied that it was not
put in, because it was not affordable. They wanted to build the facility first,
then buy equipment later. The swimming pool's system is broken and the rec
facility never had one. Responding to Mr. Lieberman, Mr. Ollendorff said that
he thought a small amount of free weights had been purchased and placed
behind the counter. Mr. Lieberman said that he had not seen any and
wondered why we did not have them. Mr. Ollendorff said that they were afraid
of the liability, in the instance someone hurt themselves. Mr. Ollendorff will
find out and report back to him. Mr. Lieberman asked if there was a way to
expand the tiny half court basketball court. Mr. Ollendorff said that there was
not any room to do so.
