She said there was no
advantage whatsoever to having such a business there.

Mr. Richard :Rosenfeld, 7217 Princeton, said at the last Council meeting, he
provided police reports on the two st. IDuis lcx::ations operated by Interstate
Blcx:xi Bank. Now he am other ad hoc cannni.ttee members are obtaining the same
infonnation from other cities where Interstate operates, so it may be shown
that Interstate has similar tyPes am numbers of police calls wherever it 0p-
erates. He said Interstate has badly miscalculated the nature of University
City because large mnnbers of clients will not be fO\.lI'rl here, am better ways
can be foun:i to assist those who sell their blcx:xi to meet their needs. He
said the ad hoc group will keep operating 'W1til it is sure the blcx:xi bank
will not open, and that no amount of IOOney in a business license fee is
enough to compensate for the burglaries, auto thefts, assaults and peace dis-
turbances that will occur. He said the .ilrpact on the adjacent neighborhoods
and neart>y businesses, as well as the entire community, would be devastating.

Mr. Rory Ellinger, 7340 Melrose, Musick Neighborhcx:xi Association president,
said this problem affects all of University City, not just the neighborhoods
near the proposed blcx:xi bank. He asked those in the audience who support the
proposed $50,000 license fee on the blcx:xi bank to stand, and all rose. He
said he has never seen University City so 'W1ited on an issue. He applauded
the Mayor and Council for the courage they were about to show by passing this
bill, am he asked all in the audience to support them in this effort by vot-
ing for this tax on August 6.

Mr. David still, Jr., 7005 Canrlen Court, said no one wants a blcx:xi bank here,
and it would cause businesses to leave University City. He said it would not
be gcx:xi for the City, the neighborhoods or residents' taxes.

Ms. Genies Jordan, 7035 Melrose, president of Melrose Neighborhcx:xi Associa-
tion, said the possibility of a blcx:xi bank in University City is causing an
inunense emotional strain in the comrmmity. He said he will do all he can legally to
prevent the blcx:xi bank from lcx::ating here. His idea was to make the fee so
large that it would pay for the expense of having such a business in the com-
nn.mi.ty, and he urged Council to approve this bill.

Mr. Wagner said the citizens have spoken early, often, and forcefully about
the Interstate Blcx:xi Bank and the fact that this business will bring nothing
to University City but a need for IOOre city savices and expenses to maintain
the quality of life of the neighborhoods.
