To: Honorable Mayor Adams and Council
From: Julie Feier, City Manager
Date: April 17, 2009
Subject: Weekly Update
Mayor Adams and I met last week with our counterparts from Olivette to discuss the
joint redevelopment concepts for Olivette and University City around the Interstate
170/Olive interchange that have been floating around for several years.
To that end, we agreed to schedule a joint meeting of the two City Councils to discuss
Michael Mindlin of Architectural Firm
mutual interests and hear a presentation from
Suttle Mindlin
about some redevelopment approaches. This may also be an
opportunity to discuss the possibility of collaborating in the future on an indoor pool. The
7:00 PM on Monday, May 11 at Centennial Commons.
meeting is scheduled for
Please try to make it if at all possible.
The School District asked that I alert you of a component of their proposed 2009-2010
District is
school district budget that will affect the City of University City. The
proposing that they close the Natatorium for the 2009-2010 school year
to reduce
their operating deficit. As you know, this will offset our operating deficit by $10,000. The
Board of Education has asked district administration to reach out to the city government
to see if perhaps the City can assist with supporting the Natatorium. The Natatorium
operates at a roughly $120,000 loss for the District without accounting for the millions of
dollars in needed repair. The District did not indicate what level of financial support they
were seeking. In light of our extreme budget difficulties, I assume the answer is no, but
wanted to confirm with you first. If you would like to provide additional funding to the
District please let me know in the next week.
We submitted a grant request this week for funding for six police officers through a
COPS grant totaling $1,147,266.00
stimulus package . On Wednesday, The U.S.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency
,
announced the final Preparedness Grants Allocations for Fiscal Year 2009. The
Preparedness Grants are for ten federal grant programs, totaling nearly $970 million.
These grants will assist state, local and tribal governments and private industry in
strengthening community preparedness. The grant funding will go to preparedness
activities including transit, intercity bus, trucking and port security and toward bolstering
interoperable communications and emergency operations centers.
