To: Honorable Mayor Adams and Council
From: Julie Feier, City Manager
Date: June 12, 2009
Subject: Weekly Update
The stormy end to spring has placed an enormous workload on city crews. The flash
flood on Wednesday, May 27 followed by two substantial windstorms Tuesday, June 2
and Monday, June 8 has required additional overtime and resources. City and County
crews worked together to clear roads with impressive speed following the storms.
Parks, Forestry, and Public Works crews have been focused on removing fallen limbs
from city trees and will begin on the parks once the streets are clear. Residents should
cut, bundle and tie their limbsat the curb following city guidelines for collection by
sanitation crews. Larger private trees/limbs will require the residents to hire a private
contractor for removal. New City Fellowship continues their amazing ministry. They
flooding issues
continue to assist families impacted by from the rains this season.
Volunteers from New City Fellowship and Restore St. Louis are assisting residents with
clean up of basements and removal of debris. If you need help or wish to assist them
with their ministry, call Andrew Stern, Work Day Director, New City Fellowship and
Restore St. Louis at 314-726-2302 ext. 222. New City Fellowship is located at 1483
nd
82 Street in University City.
As many of you know, the High School, where our core gateway network switch is
located, lost power in varying forms since the bad morning storm from Monday
morning. We house our core gateway switch there because that is where Charter
Communications terminates fiber for all government buildings in University City,
according to the terms of our franchise agreement. When power is lost at the High
School, all remote buildings will lose IP telecommunications, the ability to work in
network applications and email and internet services. Network users at the main City
Hall building, where the data center is located, will lose email and internet services.
Seminar on Environmental Best
The St. Louis County Municipal League will host a
Municipal Practices,
Wednesday, June 24 from 3:00-5:00 PM in the lower level of the
Creve Coeur Government Center. The two-hour seminar will cover Energy
Usage/Efficiency, Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Policies, Citizens
Engagement and Outreach and use of ICLEI software (ICLEI, International Council for
Local Environmental Initiatives) to conduct a city’s Green House Gas Inventory and
their metric software to assist local governments in creating an energy master plan. The
organization is now officially ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, a local
