To: Honorable Mayor Adams and Council
From: Julie Feier, City Manager
Date: June 26, 2009
Subject: Weekly Update
U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill will chair a Senate field hearing
on Monday, June 29,
9:00 AM at our Community Center, the OCHS Senior Center, 975 Pennsylvania Ave. in
University City to examine the growing problems in the quickly expanding reverse
mortgage industry. Television shows are regularly interrupted with commercials about a
“great” new financial opportunity backed by the federal government: a reverse mortgage
loan that allows seniors to convert the equity in their homes into cash. While this can be
a useful tool for some, many elderly homeowners are prime targets for predatory
lending schemes in a rapidly growing industry. Because seniors often have so few
financial resources beyond their home equity, it is especially important that strong
consumer protections exist to keep seniors from falling prey to aggressive marketing
and predatory lending tactics. When seniors are taking advantage of and default on
these loans, the government, not the lender, is frequently left holding the bag.
Senator Christopher “Kit” Bond’s Office will host aListening Post
on Wednesday,
nd
July 1, 2:00-3:00 p.m. at University City City Hall, on the 2 floor. Listening Posts are
meetings for Missourians to discuss their concerns with federal policies and agencies
with members of the Senator’s staff. A representative of the Senator, Lane Koch, will
be available at the Listening Post. For a list of upcoming Listening Posts, or visit
www.bond.senate.gov.
Reminder of the Public Information Open House at the Regional Arts Commission
(RAC) on Wednesday, July 8 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Learn the latest on the
Loop Trolley Project and share your ideas about the proposed route, trolley
vehicles and much more. There will be a presentation at 4:30 PM and 6:00 PM.
Do you have a few hours a month to make a difference in the life of an older neighbor?
That is all it takes to help an older adult continue to maintain a fulfilling and independent
St. Louis County Older Resident Programs (CORP)
lifestyle. The offers many
wonderful volunteer opportunities to be of service to your older neighbors.
Transportation to medical appointments is the most critical need but there are many
ways you can help. Training and mileage reimbursement are available. Help us help
others. CORP needs volunteer drivers, but there are other volunteer opportunities
available for those who are interested in helping older adults maintain independent
