<br /> <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION 2009 - 07 <br /> <br /> WHEREAS Harriett Friedman Woods was a long-time resident of the City of University City; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS she first began her political career with her election in April 1967 to the City Council of <br /> <br /> University City, representing Ward 2; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS she continued her political career at the state level, holding office as an appointee to the <br /> State Transportation Commission and then elected in 1976 as State Senator from District 14; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS Harriet Woods played a significant role on the City Council and throughout her life in <br /> achieving a stable community that opened its arms to people of all races and walks of life; and <br /> <br /> <br /> WHEREAS she subsequently became the first woman and the second person of the Jewish faith in <br /> Missouri to be elected to Missouri's second highest executive position, Lieutenant Governor of Missouri in <br /> 1984; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS she used her personal experience to become a mentor for other woman candidates and as <br /> President of the National Women's Political Caucus encouraged women throughout the U.S. to step into the <br /> political arena; and <br /> <br /> <br /> WHEREAS she worked passionately to aid society's most vulnerable - the elderly, minorities, and the <br /> homeless; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS Harriet Woods fought hard to obtain equal opportunities for women in government and <br /> business; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS she was a featured speaker at the 1992 Democratic National Convention and was named by <br /> President William Clinton as the head of the Coalition for Women's Appointments; and <br /> <br /> <br /> WHEREAS Harriet Woods selflessly gave of her time and energy to the people she represented, the <br /> women she mentored, and the city, state and country she served; <br /> <br /> NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Council declares June 2, 2009, will be Harriet <br /> Woods Day in University City, a day of recognition on what would have been her 80th birthday for a woman <br /> who found joy in being a true public servant. <br /> <br /> <br /> Adopted this lst day of June, 2009. <br /> <br /> <br /> eph Adams, Mayor <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Joyce Pumm, City Clerk <br />
