Resolution #-2009 - 12

A Resolution of the City of University City to authorize the City Manager to execute a
Memorandum of Understanding between the City of University City and the Department
of Homeland Security providing for the construction of a new Fire Station through Grant
money if awarded. Be it resolved by the City Council of University City as follows:

Whereas the current University City Fire Station number one is approximately
100 years old and does not meet the needs of modern day Fire Stations; and

Whereas the University City Police Department would benefit from the building
by being able to utilize the existing engine room as a sally port for prisoner drop off and
pick up. By accomplishing this you do not have people in custody walking thru public
corridors; and

Whereas a building inspection was done by a University City Code Official and
58 serious health, safety and code violations were noted; and

Whereas an environmental Consultant conducted a study of the current Firehouse
and also found numerous health related issues including black mold and other Microbial
growths; and

Whereas the size of Fire Trucks and Ambulances being built today along with the
numerous health and safety issues the existing Firehouse has become obsolete and is in
dire need of replacement; and

Whereas the Police Department and Municipal Court are in great need of ADA
accessible space to perform their duties and the relocation of the Fire House would assist
in the completion of their duties;
Whereas the Council supports the Homeland Security Grant application for $3.2
million dollars in order to complete a fire house at the intersection of Vernon and West
Gate on land donated by Washington University valued at $250,000.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Council supports the grant
would require a $200,000 in match funds to construct the new fire house and require
additional funds in the future to rehabilitate the existing Fire House 1 into a sally port,
court room and jail and office facilities for the Police Department.

Adopted this 31St day of August of 2009.

Attest:

~'"°Z` Clerk ;;ayo
