youth but felt like it was the first stage and now needed to go to stage two. He felt this was <br />the initial dialog of the program. <br />Mr. Glickert agreed with Mr. Crow that this was a great start and a lot of questions needed <br />to answered and there were a lot of areas that were still very grey. Conversation with the <br />school district on how they can get involve with this needs to happen. Mr. Glickert stated <br />that a look at a federal grant needs to be explored also. He thought maybe that the 5% it <br />would involve from the high school were being honed in on as he has heard from many how <br />great the youth are from our community. Mr. Glickert stated that there are other options out <br />there as getting a boxing program started but it is a matter of getting everyone together. He <br />asked the City Manager to find out how many of the Centennial Commons scholarships are <br />used that are offered. He believed there were five used the last time he asked. Mr. Glickert <br />said it was a great start but should be held over for more discussion. <br />Mr. Sharpe stated that this concept of working with youth was marvelous. He said there are <br />some things we can partner with the school district, even funding. He even liked some of <br />the concepts Mr. Davoli brought up this evening. Mr. Sharpe stated he would like to see <br />something funded for the youth as they are our future. <br />CITIZEN COMMENTS <br />Ed McCarthy, 7101 Princeton Ave. <br />Mr. McCarthy thought the youth Mr. Price was trying to reach will not utilize this program. <br />He felt you could not force the targeted youth into this program and they would just drop out <br />anyway. Mr. McCarthy asked what was going to be done for the other 5 or 8 hundred kids <br />that could use help. <br />Mr. Price said it is for all young folks and thought when those kids are talked about, they are <br />inferring to the black children. A dialog continued between Mr. Price and Mr. McCarthy. <br />Mr. Crow asked Ms. Feier to walk back through how do we do this program, minimizing the <br />possibility of failure. The next step is to have Ms. Feier come up with the next level of <br />details, with a list of risks and ways to avoid failure, <br />Gary Hawkins, 7634 Hawthorne Pl <br />Mr. Hawkins enjoyed University City’s diversity. He felt these jobs would keep the children <br />of all races off the street. He felt if the program is not supported, more police would be <br />needed. Mr. Hawkins stated he would like to see the Council come to a consensus and if <br />not put it in the hands of the school district and the Sports Association. He also mentioned <br />working with the many church associations in the community. He gave many examples of <br />where a youth would learn a new set of skills other then picking up trash, etc. <br />Mayor Adams thought he heard a consensus that something should be done but at what <br />level. He felt that before the City Manager and staff is asked to do more work on refining <br />the program, he would like a confirmation that Council is willing to move down this road with <br />the limited budget resources. Questions he heard to be answered yet are what level of <br />assistance can be obtain from things as grants etc. and how we would interface with the <br />school district. He proposed that Council agree upon a funding level if there is an interest to <br />move forward. <br /> 9 <br /> <br />
