Crow never included such a goal in his literature or among his talking points before any group.
Secondly he felt that assertion in the email along with the reference to Mr. Crow’s partner
constitutes inflammatory language intended to damage the character and credibility of Mr.
Crow. He felt that as an elected official you would be expected to raise the level of civil
discourse not to take it to a new low and viscous level. Mr. Hoagland stated the fear, ignorance
and hate that fuel homophobia needed to eradicated not promoted. He asked for an apology
for injecting such divisiveness in her campaign rhetoric and Mayor Welsch to public repudiate
them.

Joan Suarez, 7224 Pershing Ave.
Ms. Suarez read her written statement. She noted that University City has had a commitment
to diversity and inclusion and that is why she lives here. She said the City became the home to
the women’s League and later embraced racial diversity by welcoming the African Americans
to prevent the white flight, it is a home to a great number of religious and ethnic diversity and
the City’s website quotes our pride “diversity in residential, businesses, educational and
entertainment districts.” The Council passed an affirmation action resolution and months later
the situation was different. The use of issues related to race, religion, gender and sexual
orientation end up polarizing the community and can’t be written off as just politics. Ms. Suarez
stated that when a State Representative and now a University City School Board member
distributes information accusing a Mayoral candidate of hiding his sexual orientation, she sees
it as a blatant attempt to instill prejudice and mistrust to influence voters. She asked the
Council to repudiate these tactics.

Richard Dockett, 6844 Crest Ave
Mr. Dockett dittos the words of the speakers before him. His said that king of bigotry should not
be practiced on his compadre Mr. Terry Crow. Mr. Dockett noted the good work of Ms. Evelyn
Shields, Ms. Lynette Hicks and Mr. Dennis Lockett in the clean up process of the northeast
area. He noted it is now clean, clean, clean. Mr. Dockett said the racism and sexism is in the
process of raising its ugly neck.

Stephen Moore, 7578 Stanford Ave.
Mr. Moore stated he was a lawyer and moved to U City in 2006 from New Orleans. He stated
that New Orleans is a diverse place but not a community as is University City. This was his
image of U City until he received an email. Mr. Moore said it sullies University City and
undermines the democratic process. He urged the Council to adopt a statement denouncing
these tactics.

Mae Etta Weston, 1595 Mendell
Ms. Weston was present to speak on the City’s plans for the forgotten corridor of Olive,
specifically the area west of North and South to McKnight. She noted that the economic
development on Olive has been east of North and South. The only development in this area
except for Aldi’s is Seafood Market proposed re-opening at the Value City site. Ms. Weston
wanted to say again that there is no need for more dollar stores, thrift stores, tattoo parlors,
pay-day loans, Asian restaurants, beauty shops, used appliance stores, car washes,
businesses with signs in foreign languages or businesses that don’t hire area residents. Ms.
Weston stated that they want the same thing for their community as other residents want:
conform to Municipal Codes for signs and upkeep, offer immediate goods and services,
welcomes us as consumers, and offers job opportunities. She limited her questions to three:

2
