Council Agenda Item Cover <br />___________________________________________________________________ <br />MEETING DATE: <br /> June 7, 2010 <br />AGENDA ITEM TITLE: <br /> Designation of the Solid Waste Fund as an Enterprise <br />Fund <br />AGENDA SECTION: <br /> City Manager’s Report <br />CAN THIS ITEM BE RESCHEDULED? : <br />Yes <br />BACKGROUND REVIEW: <br />In Fiscal Year 2009, the City began separating the <br />revenue and expenditures from the Solid Waste Fund separately from the General <br />Fund. The idea behind this change was that the solid waste service charges be set <br />in an amount to fully support the expenditures related to solid waste services. This <br />fund has operated for two years, but has not officially been designated an enterprise <br />fund which is a type of fund which operates similarly to a business. This designation <br />requires different accounting methods also similar to a business. Staff believes this <br />fund is self-sufficient at this point and it is appropriate to officially designate the Solid <br />Waste Fund as an enterprise fund beginning July 1, 2010. <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />Staff recommends this designation. <br /> <br />
