FR0~1 THE DESK OF NANCY ~IACCARTNEY
' ~ DIRECTOR OF PARKS, RECREATION AND FORESTRY
T0: JULIE FEIER, CITY MANAGER
SUBJECT: POOL HOURS DURING DAYS SCHOOLS ARE IN SESSION
DATE: JANUARY 28, 2010
Attached is a memo that went to the Park Commission for their October, 2009 meeting. At that
meeting they unanimously voted to approve the closing of the Heman Park pool on weekdays after
the school district goes back in session in mid August. This will have no effect on the early part of
the season nor will it impact weekday early morning lap swim where we can provide a safe staffing
level.
For the 2009 season we were optimistic that our past problems with safe staffing levels would be eliminated by our recruitment efforts to hire adult guards coupled with the economic
problems
steering more adults looking for jobs. This did not occur and we again experienced unsafe staffing
levels which required our Assistant Superintendent of Recreation to be in a guard chair for weeks.
while this decision does have minor budget savings, the main reason we are having to make the
adjustment is to accommodate the academic schedule of the guards. This has been an on-going issue
when the high school goes back in session.
June 21, 2010 J-2-1
