MINUTES OF THE CALOP COMMISSION, FEBRUARY 15, 2007
The meeting convened at 5:05 p.m. at the CALOP office, 630 Trinity. In attendance were: Ed Nickels, Eric Friedman,
Eleanor Mullin, Karol Walters, Marla Roach, Jim Kirchherr, Mae Etta Weston, Cameron Sanders, Councilman Michael
Glickert and Councilwoman Lynn Ricci. Gladys Creer arrived at 6:15 p.m.
At this meeting, the remaining candidates for grants have been asked to speak and answer questions.
1. The Monument in Skip Berger's Garage, David McCahan. He explained his background as a history teacher; his intent
to to help viewers learn the lessons history gives us. Ed asked how her would set up interviews; he replied he has some
set already. Jim said he thought scope too broad--WW I through Viet Nam; he replied he would interview/cover one person
per time period. Ed suggested he contact Richard Poehling, local attorney who was on the Calley case.
2. Old St. Ferdinand Shrine, Bruce Marren, Leah Ganz. Bill B __ , President of the Friends of St. Ferdinand, a not-for-profit
organization accompanied them, and spoke of the archival and other help they were providing The organization maintains
the property. Jim asked if the film would be chronological, or use a story; they said a story. Eleanor asked if they were
seeking funding from the Friends organization or city of Florissant; they said the Friends might find them some money. Jim
said he has some film from the initial dig there. Mae Etta asked what age group was being targeted; they said broad range.
3. A Sewer Runs Through It, Boyd Pickup James Leiendecker. They believe the public knows very little about the River
&
Des Peres, which runs through U City. They want to show what it could be if beautified. Film may include other such
systems, like Dardenne Creek, which have been improved. Jim asked if this would cover the whole length of the river--they
said emphasis on certain parts. Marla asked if this has a strong political angle--pushing what should be done; they said they
just wanted to expose people to possibilities Mae Etta asked how 'ordinary people' will be involved or important in this; they
are still working on that.
4. Wehrenberg Theaters' First 100 Years, Daniel Byington & Steve DeBellis. This is the oldest privately held theater chain,
started here around time of the World's Fair. They presented an outline of the film. Eleanor asked about the cooperation of
Wehrenberg using footage; they do have cooperation, and much of the film will be based on the book they have already
published. Ed asked if some general film history would be included, not just Wehrenberg, they said yes. Jim asked if they
would be able to use film clips; they said Wehrenberg's people have said they will deal with studios on their behalf. Will
Wehrenberg want to censor them; they said no.
5. AOR STL (Note Bene: This was not one of the top six reflected in the minutes of the last meeting. Apparently, in a
corrected count, Cameron found this came in 6th, so asked him also)
Jim asked he had rights to the music; he doesn't know yet. Marla asked if there will be interviews, he said yes, and lots of
if
photos. Will be done chronologically.
6. Different Way of Life, Brent Jaimes. He presented a revised, far more accurate budget, which has costs much higher, but
he is not raising the amount he is requesting. Bruce also said he has made contacts that should help with the showing and
selling of the film. Eleanor asked if covering 5 alternative life-style groups in 30 minutes was too much. He said the 5 fall into
three types, and this would really be an overview. Jim asked if he will be allowed to film in the Amish community; he said not
as much. Also, one group mentioned does not seem to really be functioning; own an empty building
7. Something About Webster, Kathy Corley. Marla disclosed that she had taken classes from Kathy in the past. She is a
film instructor at Webster University. Her intent is to show Webster from the perspective of mid-westerners. The '16 in
Webster Groves' and follow us films looked at it from the perspective of 'big city easterners'. Many questions as to whether
she shouldn't seek funding from Webster; she replied that this is local interest, as per our 5 year plan, even if not U. City.
The interviews ended at 7:00 p.m.; Ed had to leave for an Historical Preservation meeting; Eric took over the
meeting. We have approximately $40,000.00 to grant.
Jim moved we ask for a firm outline to clarify the proposal on 'A Sewer Runs Through It' before we grant them money; Mae
Etta Seconded, passed by acclamation. Jim moved we ask for a firm outline of 'The Monument in Skip Berger's Garage'
before we grant money. At this point, Cameron explained that asking for outlines and clarification are the normal process
once we give the grant, and must be approved before any money is distributed. Jim withdrew his motion.
Discussion turned to changing our meeting date. Eleanor had contacted Julie Feier, and this is perfectly acceptable; we just
need to tell City Hall so it can be posted. After some discussion, Jim moved we change our date to the Second Thursday of
the month, at 6:00 p.m., Eleanor seconded, approved by acclamation.
We then turned back to deciding the grants. After discussion, Jim moved that we make the following grants: 1.
Wehrenberg, the First 100 Years: $5000.00,2. A Sewer Runs Through It: $7500.00, 3. Old S1. Ferdinand Shrine:
$5000.00,4. A Different Way of Life $7500, and 5. The Monument in Skip Berger's Garage: $7500.00.
Eleanor seconded, approved by acclamation.
Minutes of the previous two meetings were read. Gladys moved to approve both as corrected; Jim seconded, approved
by acclamation.
At 8:45 p.m., Jim moved we adjourn, Mae Etta seconded, approved by acclamation
Respectfully submitted,
Eleanor Mullin, CALOP Secretary
