Applicant Proposed Film Project
Edie Barnard, U. City Sleuths: Uncovering the Hidden
Midwest Center for Media Stories of a Unique Community
Curtis L. Minor Trailblazers – The History of Meachum
Park, MO

After the interviews, the commission voted, with discussion, on which applicants should
receive funding. Successful candidates were Edie Barnard and Curtis L. Minor.

After selecting the successful candidates, the commission determined the amount of funding
to grant toward each candidate’s project.

A motion was made by Mr. Wilcox to grant $7,500 to U. City Sleuths – Uncovering the
Hidden Stories of a Unique Community on the condition that no grant/stipend be given to
students and that project plans be coordinated with the CALOP/High School Education
project and all elements subject to CALOP Education Committee approval . The motion was
seconded by Ms. Creer, and approved.

A motion to grant $5,000 to “Trailblazers – The History of Meachum Park, MO” was made by
Mr. Wilcox and seconded by Ms. Creer, with discussion. After discussion was held on the
amount of the grant, the motion was withdrawn.

A motion was then made by Mr. Wilcox to grant $4,500 to “Trailblazers – The History of
Meachum Park, MO” under the condition that the project be reframed to focus on the history
of the region and individuals roles in the African American community. The motion was
seconded by Ms. Creer, and approved.

Staff Liaison Report
Ms. Lay reported that payments from Charter Communications would now be sent
electronically to CALOP. Ms. Lay also reported that new hyperlinks were added to CALOP’s
web page; these links would direct visitors to information about CALOP grants and allow
visitors to subscribe to CALOP news and announcements. Mr. Freidman suggested that
subscription services be broken down into subcategories so that web users have the option
to subscribe to grant announcements only.

Announcements
Mr. Friedman relayed an announcement from Chair Ed Nickles that the 100 Year Birthday
for the Lions would be coming up next year and that it would be a great opportunity for
CALOP to participate in.

Adjournment
There being no further business before the commission, a motion to adjourn was made,
seconded, and approved. The meeting adjourned at 8:38 p.m.

After the commission adjourned, Boyd Pickup and Jamie Leiendecker, grantees for the film
A Sewer Runs Through It, arrived. Since the commission was not in session, Eric Friedman,
James Reeves, the only members present, and Genise Lay had an informal discussion with
grantees, viewed the trailer, and suggested that the grantees come back and provide their
update to the commission while in session.

Respectfully submitted,
Mae Etta Weston, Secretary

Prepared by Genise Lay
2
