ARTS AND LETTERS COMMISSION MINUTES – Mar. 10, 2009 MEETING CALLED TO ORDER at 7:05 p.m. by Barbara Santoro, President. Commissioners Present: Excused Absences: Regina Raineri Kim Chilton Trish Hayes Adelia Parker-Castro Barbara Santoro Jennifer Stokes Julie Bianchi Calla Smorodin Resigned: Marilyn Cathcart Daniel Talonn Claire Hyman Dan Martin Others Present: Lisa Greening Tom McCarthy, Liaison, City January ’09 Meeting Minutes Minutes were approved per revisions. Motion to approve by Claire seconded by Julie Treasurers Report – Lisa Greening Lisa Greening discussed and the distributed financial statement for the previous month. She informed us that the check for Best in Show of the Sculpture Series was not deposited yet – it does not show up on the Sculpture Series Funds. Barbara presented a donation check for $30.00 from Ms. Ruth P. Steele. Regina will issue a Thank You letter on behave of the Commission. Lisa remind us that Commissioners are strongly encouraged to donate funds to this Commission. Councilmember’s Report – Terry Crow  Terry thanked the Commission for the work we do.  Flood update – a decision is in the works to buy homes on Wilson Ave. that were damaged by the flood in September. $450,000 in wages and overtime were used to clean up. Feds will buy 3 to 1 (U City) homes damaged. It will be a case-by-case basis, but some homes with less damage and are still deemed safe, will be moved to City-owned sites.  The City is trying very hard to preserve serves to its residents, leaf pick-up, etc.  Property tax & sales tax increases will be in proposed in August.  Gallop applications are being accepted. Staff Liaison’s Report – Tom McCarthy  Before Tom orders a plaque for the sculpture in front of Cent. Comm., he discussed pricing with the Commission. Dan has offered to contact Arch Engraving as a less expensive alternative.  Budget is the same as last year for the A & L Commission.  Signs for the sculptures have been ordered. COMMITTEE REPORTS Sculpture Series – Julie Bianchi, Tom McCarthy  Julie gave descriptions of all of the works presented by the Wash U students at the sculpture series show. She handed out the proposals prepared by the students as well.  Press release post cards are ready for distribution. Map & press release will be sent to the high school, library and Cent. Comm. (50), Wash U(500), RAC (50).  Julie clarified that the Darwin Portman Award is $100.00  Blue Ribbon Panel – Carol Portman will be asked to be on the panel. Calla will extend the invitation to her family.
