Director, library staff <br /> <br />The meeting of the University City Public Library board was called to order at 5:14p.m., <br />8/27/2008 by David Stokes, President. <br /> <br />Minutes <br />The minutes from the meeting of June 18,2008 were approved with a correction to the date on the <br />header. <br /> <br />Correspondence <br />None. <br /> <br />Friends' report <br />The Friends have not yet had their first meeting. September 25 will be first speaker: Billyo <br />O'Donnell discussing his book "Painting Missouri". <br /> <br />Council liaison <br />Byron Price at his first meeting with the library board discussed the problems with too large <br />disorderly crowds of youths in the loop. The city is discussing having an earlier curfew to help <br />keep the youngest kids from being out late. He indicated that there had been many arrests after the <br />incidents reported in the press. Welcome Byron. <br /> <br />Librarian's report <br />a. Kyle Walker is the newest new trustee to join the board - welcome Kyle. Kyle and Joy <br />replace Ed Hansell and Jessica Friedlander. <br />b. The library received a grant to pay for 75% of the cost to replace the public access computers, <br />printer, and to add a self-checkout station in the Youth Services area. Another grant, for <br />$2500, will fund a program on books about 'love and forgiveness'. <br />c. Jarvis Thurston, deceased, has left the library a legacy gift of $50,000 for mystery novels and <br />poetry. The plan is to spend from this gift over several years. <br />d. UCity police are still working to arrest the man who took the deposit money for the front <br />entrance benches and has not provided the contracted services. <br />e. The library received good scores in the recent city services survey: Good - 85%, Satisfactory <br />- 11.8%, Needs improvement - 2.9%; unfortunately the number ofrespondents was very low. <br />f. The summer children reading program was a big success with 387 children reading at least <br />12 hours and 105 young adults volunteering during the program. <br /> <br />Page 1 of 2 <br />
