University City Library board meeting minutes, 6/24/2009 <br />Attendance <br />Members Present:, William Baldwin, Gwen Beckwith, Luise Hoffman, Joy Lieberman, <br />Larry Nolan, David Stokes, Kyle Walker <br />Members Absent: Patrick Gallagher, Susan Glassman (excused) <br />City council liaison: Absent <br />Library staff: Linda Ballad -Director, Patrick Wall -Asst. Director <br />The meeting of the University City Public Library board was called to order at 5:17p.m., <br />6/24/2009 by David Stokes, President. <br />Minutes <br />The minutes from the meeting of May 13, 2009 were approved with the correct to the date of the last minutes. <br />Correspondence <br />None. <br />Friends' report <br />No Friend's meeting until September. <br />Council liaison <br />Absent. <br />Librarian's report <br />a. The failure of the electrical transformer used by the alarm system and phone system <br />caused about $3800 of unexpected maintenance. <br />b. Five library staff who announced they were leaving for college, foreign countries and <br />another job. A large number of people have applied for the vacant reference librarian <br />position, and a former employee has returned along with two new hires. c. Our cost for inter library deliveries is being reduced by the Missouri State Library paying <br />for two days a week. <br />d. The library is pleased to learn that the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission granted <br />$2000 towards the operation of the library's Gallery. <br />e. We have a new board member to replace Mary Costantin; Luise Hoffman attended her first meeting tonight. <br />f. The new granite bench for the parking lot entrance was installed this week. <br />g. The Summer Reading Program started with 360 children by the end of the second week, <br />with over 100 teen volunteers. <br />h. The library is hosting, at the Delmar Ave. entrance, one of the nine lion statues decorated <br />by local artists and he will remain until the 100th anniversary of the Lion gates on September 12. We understand that the lions subsequently will be auctioned and the <br />library is considering whether to have a fund raising event to be able to make a bid. We <br />also need to find a possible suitable indoor home for the statue. <br />i. The University City Historic Preservation Commission members gave verbal OK to the <br />roof/skylight design as it will have minimal change to the ground level view of the roof line and what will be visible will be similar to the current structure's materials. <br />President's report <br />None. <br />Committee reports <br />Page 1 of 2 <br />
