University City Library board meeting minutes, l0/14/2009 <br />Attendance <br />Members Present: William Baldwin, Luise Hoffman, Joy Lieberman, <br />Larry Nolan, David Stokes, Kyle Walker, Susan Glassman <br />Members Absent: Patrick Gallagher, Gwen Beckwith (excused) <br />City council liaison: Absent <br />Library staff: Linda Ballad -Director, Patrick Wall -Asst. Director <br />The meeting of the University City Public Library board was called to order at 5:24p.m., <br />10/14/2009 by David Stokes, President. <br />Minutes <br />The minutes from the meeting of August 19, 2009 were approved. <br />Correspondence <br />Linda routed three thank you notes from patrons, including one from UCity in Bloom thanking the <br />library for allowing use of the basement for sorting and packing the bulbs for the Fall sale. <br />Linda also provided a copy of a letter she sent to Mr. Ed McCarthy to answer a concern he had <br />about the expense for doing the roof replacement. She wrote that the work was more expensive <br />than just a simple repair might cost because the work was also going to remedy an original design <br />deficiency (lack of slope), add insulation and replace/upgrade the skylight for better energy <br />efficiency. <br />Friends' report <br />The Friends met yesterday and will have their first speaker on October 15. Additional speakers <br />are being planned for future events and there was some discussion of having an event to celebrate <br />the 70th anniversary of the library late this year. <br />Council liaison Absent. <br />Librarian's report <br />a. All of the trees along the sidewalk along the parking lot were removed for safety. The <br />city will replace them with new non-Bradford Pear trees. b. Sue Rehkopf has added a collection of historical photos of the Delmar Loop to the <br />library's web photo library. The library will also be adding pictures from slides provided <br />by former city manager Charles Henry. <br />c. Library Board President David Stokes signed the contract for the roof and skylight repair <br />and we are waiting for work to start any day. <br />d. There will be a public drawing on Monday to choose the winning donor who will select a name for our lion. <br />President's report <br />David discussed his participation in the UCity party this past weekend where he made a winning <br />bid for `our' lion sculpture with donated funds. The lion bid was for $3550. Over $15,000 was <br />collected for ongoing maintenance of the `lions' on Delmar. <br />Committee reports <br />None. <br />Page 1 of 2 <br />
