CITY OF UNIVERSITY CITY
MINUTES OF THE TRAFFIC COMMISSION
MEETING ON MAY 14, 2003

Acting chairperson Susan Schafers called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. Those
present were:

Melcine Henderson Shelley Welsch, Council Liaison
Elizabeth Schiller Mariela Tapia, Traffic Commission Secretary
Loretta Bryant Charles Adams, Police Department
Raymond Creer

Residents were present representing the intersection of Alanson and Golf Course Drive

1) INTERSECTION ALANSON AND GOLF COURSE DRIVE

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

?
Several Traffic Request Forms were received regarding this intersection. One
dated April 1, 2003, submitted by Louise M. Nicholson. Another one dated April
8, 2003, submitted by Juanita Keys and the third one submitted by Diane Emery,
dated April 12, 2003. They were requesting 4 way Stop Signs for the
intersection.
?
Even though have been 4 accidents at that intersection in the last 3 years, is the
recommendation of the Engineering Division, to deny the request since all of
them were due to drivers failing to obey the yield signs.

DISCUSSION:

?
There was Mrs. Nicholson, and Mrs. Keys present to speak. Mrs. Nicholson
stated that since people don’t pay attention to the yield signs, something has to
be done.
?
Mrs. Schafers explained that stop signs do not stop people from speeding.
Alanson is the thru street. Ms. Tapia stated that there are 2 signs around the
area informing that the speed limit is 25mph.
?
Both of them, Mrs. Nicholson and Mrs. Keys are requesting a traffic study for that
intersection. They stated that the volume of traffic is the same in both ways
(Alanson and Golf Course). They wanted to know, why Alanson Dr. has
preference over Golf Course Dr.
?
Ms. Schiller proposed to install supplemental plaques displaying “Cross traffic
does not stop” and the residents stated that those would definitely help.

The Commission voted to install supplemental plaques displaying “Cross
traffic does not stop” in addition to the existing yield sign posted.

V:\WP51\Mariela-Projects\Traffic Commission\minutes\2003\Minutes 05-14-03.doc
