PROCLAMATION <br /> <br /> OF THE <br />CITY OF UNIVERSITY CITY <br /> <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, our community looks back over its 100 years, Edward Gardner, (E.G.) Lewis stands out <br />for his contributions, and visions, which have made University City such a fine place to live; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, E. G. Lewis incorporated University City on September 4, 1906, and served as its first <br />mayor from 1906 to 1913; with there having been a total of 13 mayors serving since its incorporation to the <br />present; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, E.G. Lewis constructed the Woman’s Magazine Building to house his publishing interests, <br />which now serves as University City’s City Hall; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS <br /> , during E. G. Lewis’ time in University City, he would acquire more <br />land for subdivision development; publish two daily newspapers and several magazines; <br />founded the American Woman’s League, the People’s University and the American <br />Woman’s Republic construct the Women’s Magazine Building, Press Annex, the <br />University City’s Lions’ Gates, an Egyptian Temple, and the Art Academy; establish two <br />banks; assist in the start=up of the University City School District; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS <br /> , University City is now a wonderfully diverse and a vibrant community, <br />consisting of the Loop Business District, the Olive Business District, a diversity of <br />churches and synagogues, historic neighborhoods with a current population of 37, 644; <br /> <br />and <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Joseph L. Adams, Mayor of the City of University City, <br />do hereby dedicate this Historic Marker at the City Hall of University City, 6801 Delmar, on September 3, 2006, <br />at 2:00 p.m. <br /> <br />E. G. LEWIS <br />HISTORIC MARKER DEDICATION <br /> <br />and urge the citizens of University City to participate in this memorial dedication. <br /> <br />rd <br />Presented this 3 day of September, 2006 <br /> <br /> <br />_________________________________ <br /> Joseph L.
