SESSION 1707

MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY CITY COUNCIL

OCTOBER 6, 1997

At a special meeting of the City Council of University City held in the Council Chamber
of City Hall on Monday, October 6, 1997, Mayor Joseph L. Adams called the meeting to
order at 6:30 p.m. In addition to the Mayor, the following members of the Council were
present:

Mr. Hardy Ware
Mr. Wayne I. Munkel
Mr. Robert Wagner
Mr. Larry Lieberman
Mr. Paul E. Schoomer

Also present was City Manager Frank Ollendorff.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Mayor Adams said that Mayor Bert Gates of Shrewsbury tragically lost his eighteen year
old daughter to a car accident on Saturday, October 4th. He said that the funeral would
be Wednesday, October 8th, at 10 a.m. in Shrewsbury at St. Michaels Catholic Church.
Council ordered the City Clerk to send flowers on behalf of the City Council.

APPOINTMENT OF THIRD WARD COUNCILMEMBER:

Mr. Ware said that the City Council had interviewed qualified men and women to fill the
vacated Third Ward Councilmember seat for the past several weeks.

Mr. Ware moved the appointment of Mr. Arthur Sharpe, Jr. as Councilmember of the
Third Ward. Mr. Wagner seconded the motion.

Mr. Lieherman said that the Council received quite a number of applications which
indicated that there were citizens interested in the City Council. The applications were
reviewed very carefully. Both men and women applied and all were examined equally.

Mr. Wagner agreed with Mr. Lieberman. He said that there were many fine people, both
men and women, who applied and the Council feels confident that a consensus was
reached on the best person to handle the position.

The Mayor ordered a roll call vote: AYES: Mr. Ware, Mr. Munkel, Mr. Wagner, Mr.
Lieberman, Mr. Schoomer and Mayor Adams. NAYS: none.
