PROCLAMATION FOR THE DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE <br /> April 11 thru April 18, 1999 <br /> <br />Theme: "Refuge Denied: The Voyage of the SS St. Louis" <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic persecution and <br />annihilation of E Jropean Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and <br />1945. Jews were primary victims - six million were murdered; Gypsies, the handicapped <br />and Poles were a.so targeted for destruction or decimation for racial, ethnic or national <br />reasons. Millions more, including homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of <br />war and political dissidents, also suffered grievous oppression and death under Nazi <br />tyranny; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the story of the ill-fated voyage of the SS St. Louis offers an <br />opportunity to re ~ect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies and <br />governments; and <br /> <br /> WHERE~ ~_S, the people of the City of University City should always remember the <br />terrible events of the Holocaust and should remain vigilant against bigotry and tyranny; and <br /> <br /> WHERE~_S, the people of the City of University City should continually rededicate <br />ourselves to the l;,rinciples of equality and justice for all; and <br /> <br /> WHEREitS, the Days of Remembrance have been set aside for the people of the <br />City of Universit~ City to remember the inhumanity of those who perpetrated the <br />Holocaust as welt as to reflect upon our own humanity and the need for respect of all <br />peoples; and <br /> <br /> WHEREitS, pursuant to an Act of Congress (Public Law 96-388, October 7, 1980) <br />the United States Holocaust Memorial Council designates the Days of Remembrance of the <br />victims of the Holocaust to be Sunday, April 11 through Sunday, April 18, 1999, including <br />the international i)ay of Remembrance known as Yom Hashoah, April 13. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, I, Joseph L. Adams, Mayor of the City of University City, <br />and the City Cou ~cil of University City, do hereby proclaim the week of April 11 - April <br />18, 1999 as the l~ays of Remembrance in memory of the victims, the survivors and their <br />liberators, and ftn'ther proclaim that we, as citizens of the City of University City should <br />strive to overcome intolerance and indifference through learning and remembrance. <br /> <br />Adopted this /~' day of Marc , 199~~__________e___~ <br /> <br />ATT)ES*: __ l /~ ~/ Mayor <br /> City Cerk / .] <br /> <br /> <br />
