Meeting Notes– University City Bike and Walk Task Force
7.7.2011 and Page 2

the implementation process of this plan. Steve Kraft noted that the GRG project on Delmar (Ackert
Plaza) had little or no input from citizens and minimal input from the U City Parks Commission or
City Council. Steve expressed skepticism about opportunities for citizen input to GRG in connection
with the Olive bike lanes. Beverly asked whether a bike lane down the middle of Olive was possible;
a possible issue with this would be left turns by cars. Margaret said she has seen center lanes in
Washington DC but that she understands they are expensive. Sarah asked Angelica about
connectivity from Olive to Delmar; Angelica explained that the major connectors are owned by the
County (Hanley, North&South,). Margaret reiterated the need to have a pedestrian controlled
crosswalk fat Olive to Centennial Commons. Carol expressed concern and dismay that the
presentation on the 2005 plan we had just listened to made no reference to the GRG plan, as it
seems to her that the two conflict, and stated that she hoped that he updating of the U City plan for
Olive would take into account GRG’s plans for the street. Linda asked about the GRG plan linking
Shaw Park to Old Bonhomme; Angelica said it was currently being reviewed by U City staff for ADA
compliance. Angelica updated us on the Safe Routes to School grant request confirming that this
year no infrastructure money has been requested, just money for signage.

1) Approval of agenda
Approved, with the addition of a discussion of Hartmann Towing and the sidewalk in front of it
on Olive. Also, Shannon asked whether it was possible to establish an arterial parallel to Olive—
perhaps close Vernon to use as a bike path. Steve said that would be subject to the Parkview
Gardens Master Plan. The right –of-way/sidewalk there is indeed 6 to 12 inches. (Agenda is
attached to minutes)

2) Approval of minutes of previous meeting and any admin issues
Approved, and after discussion it was decided NOT to change the next meeting date from
July 5 to July 12

3) Status of the Trailnet Master Plan and May 18 presentation
Carol noted that the presentation was well done, and well attended with approximately 35 to
40 people attending, although the audience was primarily older and white.

4) Reports on community events we participated in
Margaret reported on both the May 15 Rain Garden Block Party and Fair U City, noting we
had good foot traffic for both and that Kevin’s map was very popular. Shannon suggested that for
future events we bring a bike rack as a prop. Kevin said that Trailnet has portable bike racks we
could use. Lynette remarked that the new Loop bike racks should be in place around July 1. Sarah
asked whether there could be diagonal parking on Delmar; Lynette explained that the County would
have to approve such.

5) Status of Great Rivers Greenway Centennial Greenway in U City—no report

6) Subcommittees and working groups
Sarah suggested we consolidate these groups and put together a vision and goals for them;
Margaret said we could do that next meeting, as we are running out of time.

There was then a discussion of speed tables. Possible sites include Big Bend/Delmar and
Jackson/Gannon.

7) Other old business
