Sustainability Strategic Plan for the City of University City, Missouri <br />September 12, 2011/ REVISED JANUARY 8, 2012 <br />Page 38 <br /> <br />Glossary (continued) <br />Habitat: An ecological or environmental area that is inhabited by a particular species of animal, plant or other type of <br />organism. <br />HERS: Housing Energy Rating System <br />ICC: International Code Council <br />IES: Illuminating Engineering Society of North America <br />IGCC: International Green Construction Code <br />Impervious: Does not allow water to pass through <br />Invasive Plants or Species: Non-native plants which tend to spread aggressively. <br />LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a third-party rating system for green buildings, both new <br />construction and existing buildings operations and maintenance. <br />LEED AP: LEED Accredited Professional; a practitioner in architecture, engineering, construction or related fields that has <br />met USGBC criteria and passed an AP accreditation exam. LEED Green Associate: An individual interested in green <br />practices that has met USGBC criteria and passed a Green Associate accreditation exam. <br />Model Ordinances: Sample ordinances (laws) to assist city government officials as they make decisions concerning <br />growth and environmental protection <br />MSD Co-permittees: The MO Dept of Natural Resources has issued a Phase II Storm water Permit to the Metropolitan <br />Sewer District (MSD), St Louis County and 59 county municipalities. While MSD is the coordinating authority for the <br />separate municipal storm water/sewer systems, St Louis County and the municipalities are “copermittees” <br />Native Habitat: An area or ecosystem inhabited by species of animals and plants endemic to a particular region, or <br />which have become naturalized. <br />Native Plants: Plants best adapted to the local climate and once established, seldom need watering, mulching, <br />protection from frost or continuous mowing. <br />Pervious: Allowing water to pass through <br />Potable Water: Water safe for humans to drink <br />Rain Barrel: A large container designed to collect rain water from rooftops and store it for later use on lawns and gardens
