Green Practices Commission 6801 Delmar Boulevard, University City, Missouri 63130, Phone: (314) 862-6767, Fax: (314) 863-9146 DRAFT Meeting Minutes –University City Green Practices Commission May 24, 2012 rd Location:University City Hall, 3Floor Conference Room Attendees:Dianne Benjamin, Lynnette Hicks, Tim Michels, Jeffrey Mishkin, Neville Rapp, Jerry Breakstone, Helen Fuller, Michael Glickert Absent:Lois Sechrist Visitors:Ben Kumfer, I-CARES 1.Roll Call 2.Opening Round: a.Neville announced that the Panera Bread at the Galleria now has recycling available. Someone should call the Panera in the Loop to see if they will offer recycling. Someone official should call the local Panera office to find out their position on recycling. b.Neville attended the recent meeting about the Loop Trolley. The Trolley representatives discussed the new light poles, but are not considering the use of high efficiency bulbs.The Commission should send an official request to install high efficiencylamps. Lynnette mentioned that City staff is reviewing the plans and will recommend higher efficiency bulbs for the project. c.Neville mentioned that the River Des Peres Coalition would like to work with this Commission and the Parks Commission to apply for a grant to remove invasivespecies in Heman Park along the river. The Coalition will provide the labor for the local match. Lynnettementioned that the City has supported prior projects of the Coalition by assisting in the removal, hauling and processing of the plantings and weeds removed. d.Jeff asked about the results of the Earth Day event. Lynnette mentioned that the event was well attended. e.Jeff wanted to confirm which month the Commission does not meet, a summer month or in December? f.MichaelGlickertmentioned that he was gladto be a part of the Commission and that the previous report in 2010 was a great report. g.Helen mentioned that she is very happy to be on the Commission. h.Jerrymentioned that the bird habitat garden has been installed behind Centennial Commons. The birds seem to be enjoying the area. An article is available on University City Patch. i.Jerry mentioned that he is a member of the Mayor’s Bike and Walk Task Force and they met recently to finalize the task force report to City Council. He thinks that the H3 masterplan and design guidelines are first rate. There is overlap between the master plan and the goals of this Commission. j.Tim attended the recent Trolley public meeting and thinks thatwe neededto be pushing for it to be part of a new infrastructure redevelopment called a Community Energy Systemdown Delmar. He sent a letter to Mr. Walker to request a meetingto discuss his ideas and will be contacting the Loop Business District and Trolley group to discuss the idea. The system could potentially reduce the carbon foot print of the City,makingthe buildings more energy efficient, andincreasing the
