V

Session 1699, Minutes
June 23, 1997

Mayor Adams said that a few years back, he and his family were attacked and he understood what was going on. He said
that as Mayor of University City, he takes responsibility for the Council's actions and that he had apologized to Mrs.
Thompson. Mr. Kwame Thompson raised his voice from the audience seats and told Mayor Adams that he could not
apologize for the actions of others. Mayor Adams told Mr. Thompson that he did not have the floor and that he did not
want to hear from him again. (Mr. Thompson continued to interrupt from the audience seats). Mayor Adams told Mr.
Thompson that he would have to leave if he did not stop disrupting the meeting. Mayor Adams said that he had been
respectful to Mr. Thompson, the rest of the audience and to Mrs. Thompson. (More interruption from Mr. Thompson)
Mayor Adams asked Mr. Thompson to leave the chamber. Mr. Thompson remained in his seat.

Mrs. Thompson said that she wanted to make a few comments. She said that she would not be disrespected by no one, be
it black or white. That is why she walked out of the June 9th meeting and why she is able to walk back in here this evening.
She feels she has been disrespected and she will not take it anymore. She is sick and tired of being sick and tired. The
whole country can talk about racial relations and how everyone must work and build together as brothers or all will perish.
She thinks that this is correct, but when she looks around this country and sees these types of actions that are going on right
here in our community, something is decidedly wrong. She said this must be corrected, but asked how it could be done.
She said that this does not mean that people have to put each other down to build their race up. She said that former
Councilmember Allan Sabol was in the audience, and that he had worked very closely with Mrs. Thompson when he was
on the Council, She said that he would attest to the fact, that since he was working so very closely with her, he was beaten
down and disrespected just as badly as herself. She said that there comes a time when a person has to stand up for what
they believe in. She does not appreciate any Councilmember calling her work, her friends, her supporters in an attempt to
disgrace, discredit and destroy her. She said that anyone trying to do something like this would be exposed, because she
had worked too hard in her community, she has been a role model to the girls - she has stood up and tried to be the very
best that she could be. (A round of applause from the audience).

CITY CLERK'S DOCKFT:

BILLS FOR SECOND AND THIRD READING:

BILL NO. 8325 - AN ORDINANCE FIXING THE COMPENSATION TO BE PAID TO CITY OFFICIALS AND
EMPLOYEES AS ENUMERATED HEREIN FROM AND AFTER JUNE 25, 1997 REPEALING ORDINANCE NOS. 6061,
609 I, 6099.

The bill was given its second reading.

The bill was given its third reading.

Mr. Wagner moved adoption.
