Session 1695, Minutes
May 12, 1997

At this point, 8:45 p.m., Mrs. Thompson lelt the meeting.

20.20 FIRF DEPARTMENT:

Mr. Ollendorffsaid there was very little new in this budget. Responding to Mr. Munkel's question regarding the increase in
line 732.12, Medical Supplies, Mr. Ollendorff explained that they have found that they are under budgeting this account.
The supplies have to be replenished once their used and the use is rising dramatically because of an increase in calls. (At this
point, Mr. Ollendorff remembered two revenue items to be discussed with Council ~ added to Revenue section - P~e
Two .)

Mr. OIlendorffdirected Council's attention to Page C-36 Capital Outlay. A range hood needs to be replaced at # I Engine
House. The reserves need to be increased for Fire Truck replacement. They would like to buy an infrared smoke cutting
search camera for $25,000, but it isn't in the budget this year. Possibly will be included on a future priority list. The Fire
Department would also like to purchase an exhaust system for both fire engine houses, because they feel the diesel fumes
are harmful and additionally coats the walls with a dark grey residue. The Health Department has tested the air several
times and reports there is no danger because the doors are open and the areas are fully vented. Still the firemen are
convinced that it is unhe~hy and would like approximately $60,000 to install the exhaust systems. Mr. Munkel asked about
flooring and carpet requests under 743.04 Institutional Equipment. Mr. Ollendorff explained that the flooring was being
replaced because it was worn out, but that asbestos was discovered, as well. Since the contractor has to use special
hazardous waste procedures to remove the fooring, more expense is incurred. The existing carpeting, in the living area of
Engine House # I is worn out and needs to be replaced. Mr. Munkel asked if all the computers we are buying this year
along with the ones purchased last year would be connected in a City wide network. Mr. Ollendorff said that it would not.
Most of the computers purchased last year was to computerize the outlying facilities which are unable to be wired into the
network. Many of the City Hall computers are on the network. Currently the City is looking at inexpensive alternatives to
connect the outlying locations to the network.

ADJOURNMENT

Mayor Adams said the second budget study meeting would be meeting on the second floor, in room 6, on Wednesday
night. The meeting adjourned at 9:16 p.m.
