PRUNING: Pruning is the most important tool in the management plan; proper pruning can greatly <br />extend the health, safety and life of trees. <br />1653 trees were pruned in fiscal year 2011; this represents a decrease of 192 trees from fiscal year <br />2010. Of the 1653 trees pruned, 418 were by subcontractor at a cost of $61.00 per tree. <br /> <br />PLANTING: Planting is the only way to insure the diversity of the community forest and every attempt <br />is made to plant at least as many trees as removed. <br />During the fiscal year 2011, 282 trees were planted; this represents an increase of 32 trees from <br />fiscal year 2010. All plantings were made by in house personnel. <br /> <br />BUDGET: <br />Salaries $176,162.00 <br />Contractor Allocation: $45,000.00 <br />Trees for planting: $10,000.00 <br /> <br />TIME ALLOCATIONS: <br />Pruning: 37% <br />Removals: 51% <br />Planting: 7% <br />Other: 5% <br /> <br />PROJECTIONS FOR FISCAL YEAR 11-12: <br />Removals: 200 <br />Prunes: 1500 <br />Plantings: 200 <br /> <br />COMPLETED ACTION ITEMS FOR YEAR 2010: <br /> <br />CONTINUE TO ADVANCE THE BLOCK STREET TREE PRUNING ACROSS THE THIRD WARD. <br /> Extended the block pruning to Midland Ave. <br /> <br />PROMOTE TREE AWARENESS AND STEWARSHIP AMONG CITY RESIDENTS: <br />A) Increase tree and forest educational opportunities for residents <br />Completed a Citizen’s Tree Walk in the Flynn Park area in conjunction with the Urban Forestry <br />Commission. <br />B) Continue with the annual Arbor Day celebration. <br />Arbor Day was celebrated on April 22 with a tree planting in Millar Park in partnership with The <br />th <br />Nathaniel Hawthorn School 6 grade. <br />. <br />RECRUIT MEMBERS FOR THE URBAN FORESTRY COMMISSION <br />A) A new board member was added <br /> <br />UPDATE THE CITY’S STREET TREE INVENTORY <br />A) Street tree inventory was completed for the Parkview Gardens area. <br /> <br />INCREASE TREE PLANTING (Added by the Urban Forestry Commission) <br />A) To work towards a goal of increasing the planting of trees by 120% to offset what is <br />removed each year. <br />Increased tree plantings by 32 trees over previous year. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
