unrestrained political influence, to air pollution, water pollution, public health hazards and climate
disruption. Over the past few weeks students of Wash U have been staging a sit-in against
Peabody’s and Ameren’s coal-burning business model which has been receiving national media
attention. She stated that while the U.S. relies on an average 39 percent of coal for energy,
Missouri has been stagnated at an unsustainable 75 percent. Ms. Salzman stated that taking a
stand on the coal industry is a moral issue because people are hurt by the industry’s lack of
regulation. Residents in University City suffer from asthma, heart attacks and lung disease from
air pollution and their water being at-risk from leaky coal ash landfills. Environmental
degradation and climate change also have real impacts on agriculture and local industries reliant
on safe environmental conditions. Ms. Salzman stated that Archbishop Desmond Tutu wrote in
a recent article, “People of conscience need to break their ties with corporations financing the
injustice of climate change. We can encourage more of our universities, our municipalities and
cultural institutions to cut their ties to the fossil fuel industry.” Ms. Salzman stated that she has
been working on a draft resolution that University City could pass with a team of local residents
in order to make a statement in support of progress, justice and protecting life itself.

Nancy Wagoner, 7848 Greensfelder Lane
Ms. Wagoner stated that her car caught on fire and the University City firefighters were very
professional and efficient. She stated that these five firefighters, who will not have an income for
three months, have families. Therefore she finds the City’s decision to be unconscionable and
hopes that this specific portion of their reprimand will be given reconsideration. Ms. Wagoner
stated that almost every religion has some form of golden rule; do unto others as you would
have them do unto you. So she would like everyone to look in the mirror tonight and ask
themselves if this is the way they would like to be treated for simply posing in a picture where
you were not necessarily in full uniform.

Tom Sullivan, 751 Syracuse
Mr. Sullivan stated that there was a ruling today on the Loop Trolley lawsuit and although some
of the media is reporting it as basically being over, that is not the case, as there were five
different matters related to the lawsuit. However when the Judge dismissed the issue pertaining
to the Federal count, the other four counts went away as well. Mr. Sullivan stated that what that
means is that the remaining four counts will have to be heard in Circuit Court if the Plaintiffs
decide to pursue them, so there is still a long way to go on this issue.
Mr. Sullivan stated that his second issue has to do with the number of inoperable streetlights
throughout the City. He stated that there are now four lights out in the 6300 block of Clemens, a
light out near Enright and Limit; where there was also a recent robbery and carjacking, a light
out at Etzel and Purcell, and twenty-four streetlights out on Olive Boulevard. Mr. Sullivan stated
that the City of St. Louis tries to repair their streetlights within 48 hours, but in University City it
can take over a year. He stated that there is an ad being run by an insurance company that
provides tips on how to fight crime, number one, never park where it is dark. But unfortunately
there are a lot of dark areas in this City’s neighborhoods simply because the streetlights are not
being repaired.
Mr. Sullivan stated that the City has cut back on street sweeping, although they still issue
tickets when individuals park on the side of the street that is supposed to be swept. He stated
that if the City is trying to irritate its citizens then he does not think that you could find a better
way to do it. He stated that about a month or so ago the Ferguson Avenue bridge was on You
Paid For It with Elliott Davis, and the people in that area are being severely inconvenienced
because this has been going on for over a year. Mr. Sullivan stated that if you go by the
construction site sometimes there is nobody working, and sometimes there may be one or two
people working, so you really have to wonder when this project is ever going to be completed.

Mr. Sullivan stated that he had also made a Sunshine request on March 6, 2014, regarding the
Conditional Use Permit. He stated that he is still fighting to get his request honored because
Ms. Pumm seems to want to drag this out forever and Attorney General’s office is involved. He
10
