Session 1522, Minutes Page 5
June 4, 1990
had an obligation to Mr. Field as a businessman, but he also had one to his
constituents to resolve any possible complaints and he wanted to be sure he
was doing the right thing.
Mrs. Thompson moved to table this matter to the next meeting, on June 18. Mr.
Price seconded the motion, which carried unanimously.
LIOUOR LICENSE - 1148 FERGUSON
The City Manager said the operator of the neighborhood store at 1148 Ferguson
has again filed an application to sell beer by the package at his store.
Mr. Bruce Suber, 1090 Roth, said his concern was mostly for small businesses
which sometimes need help to survive. He said he was a 14 year resident of
this neighborhood, and a previous owner sold beer here without any incidents
that Mr. Suber was aware of. He suggested that a community needs small, more
personalized stores, and the sale of beer would create additional traffic that
small stores need. He asked C uncil to grant this license.
Mrs. Bette Strawder, 6806 Plymouth, said she and her neighbors were originally
against the sale of beer here because the store was so run-down; however, the
current operator has done an excellent job of cleaning up the store and adja-
cent area, in addition to removing an outside pay phone that was a continuing
problem. She said the neighborhood would rather see the store under its pres-
ent management than sitting empty; therefore, they had no objection to the
granting of a beer license at this location.
*Mr. Schooner arrived at this time.
Mrs. Thompson moved approval, with Mr. Price seconding the motion.
Mr. Wagner said he voted against issuing a beer license to this store earlier,
but he has since visited the store and totally agreed with Mrs. Strawder that
the operator is doing a fine job and deserves a chance to upgrade his business.
All voted Aye except Mr. Schooner, who voted Nay.
PEEL REPORT
The Personnel report for the week ending June 2, 1990 was received and ordered
filed.
POLICE DERNRDOINTEETORT
The Police Department report for the month of April, 1990 was received and or-
dered filed.
LIQUOR LICENSE - BRANDT'S MARREP, 6525 DEEMAR
(me Mr. Jay Brandt, 311 Westgate, said at the last Council meeting he requested a
license to sell liquor by the drink at his expanded Brandt's Market, 6525 Del-
mar, and Council granted a wine and beer by the drink license.
