RESOLUTION 2014 - 41
WHEREAS, University City and its citizens reside with the service territory
of Ameren Missouri; and
WHEREAS, Ameren Missouri produces 80% of its electricity from coal-
fired power plants, and only a small amount from clean and renewable forms of energy
such as wind and solar; and
WHEREAS, the City of University City has made a commitment, through
the Sustainability Strategic Plan for the City, to encourage sustainable programs and fr
practices that improve the health and quality of life in our community; and
WHEREAS, as Ameren customers we acknowledge that our energy use
has an acute impact on the environment, and that Missouri residents living closest to
Ameren's coal plants bear the greatest burden of that impact; and.
WHEREAS, as Ameren customers, we have an ethical and moral
obligation to demand that our energy dollars do not facilitate the destruction of the
environment but rather promote clean energy that keeps our rivers clean and our air
breathable.
1
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that City Council of University
City, Missouri calls on Ameren Missouri to take swift and meaningful steps to reduce its
reliance on coal-fired generation; make a transition from a coal-dominant energy
portfolio, to one that relies on wind, solar, and energy efficiency; and encourage Ameren
to move as quickly as possible to make this transition, while ensuring a fair and
equitable transition of its workforce from its coal plants to a more robust clean energy
economy.
Adopted this 13 day of October, 2014.
.i► , 0 • 5.120xze
Shelley W- , ' ayor
may,
Attest: r, '
4,Q
Joyce Pumm, City Clerk a Via.
4
.10 AtIS
