6801 Delmar Boulevard, University City, Missouri 63130, Phone: (314) 862-6767, Fax: (314) 863-9146 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Howard Mechanic was convicted of throwing a cherry bomb <br />firecracker, which hit no one and caused no damage, at the site of the burning ROTC <br />building at Washington University during an anti-Vietnam war protest on May 4, <br />1970; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, we believe justice and reconciliation are best served by reduction of <br />Howard Mechanic's unduly harsh five year sentence, imposed during a turbulent time <br />in U.S. history, and immediate release on parole, based on his co-defendant's lesser <br />sentence and on his twenty eight year life as a productive citizen. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of University <br />City, Missouri, supports Howard Mechanic's petition for the commutation of <br />sentence. <br /> <br />ADOPTED this 19th day of June, 2000. ~~t/__--~d~ <br /> ayor <br />ATTES: . . / <br /> City Clerk <br /> <br />www.universitycitymo. org <br /> <br /> <br />
