VERSION 1 <br /> <br /> <br />RESOLUTION 2007 - 4 <br /> WHEREAS <br /> Harriett Friedman Woods was a long-time resident of the City of <br />University City; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> she first held political office in University City as a Councilmember from <br />the Second Ward; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> she continued her political career at the state level, holding office as an <br />appointee to the State Transportation Commission and then elected in 1976 as State <br />Senator from District 14; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> she subsequently became the first woman and the second person of the <br />Jewish faith in Missouri to be elected to Missouri’s second highest executive position, <br />Lieutenant Governor of Missouri in 1984; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> she used her personal experience to become a mentor for other woman <br />candidates and as President of the National Women’s Political Caucus encouraged <br />women throughout the U.S. to step into the political arena; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> she worked passionately to aid society’s most vulnerable – the elderly, <br />minorities, and the homeless; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> Harriett Woods fought hard to obtain equal opportunities for women in <br />government and business; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> she was a featured speaker at the 1992 Democratic National <br />Convention and was named by President William Clinton as the head of the Coalition for <br />Women’s Appointments; and <br /> WHEREAS <br /> Harriett Woods selflessly gave of her time and energy to the people she <br />represented, the women she mentored, and the city, state and country she served; <br /> NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED <br /> that this Council declares June 2, 2007, will <br />be Harriett Woods Day in University City, a day of recognition on what would have been <br />th <br />her 80 birthday for a woman who found joy in being a true public servant. <br />th <br /> Adopted this 26 day of February, 2007. <br /> <br /> Joseph Adams, Mayor <br /> <br />Joyce Pumm, City Clerk <br /> <br />F-1-a <br />February 26, 2007 <br /> <br />
