Bars, grilles or screens placed over emergency escape windows shall be <br /> releasable or removable from the inside without the use of a key, tool or force greater than that <br /> which is required for normal operation of the window. <br /> <br /> 702.13 Emergency lighting. All buildings, rooms or spaces required by the Building Code of <br /> University City to have more than one exit or exit access, shall be equipped with approved <br /> emergency means of egress lighting to assure continued illumination for a duration of not less <br /> than one (1) hour in case of a power loss. All illuminated exit signs shall be connected to an <br /> approved emergency power source. <br /> Exceptions: One-and two-family dwellings or multiple-family dwellings not exceeding three <br /> stories in height and six dwelling units per floor. <br /> (SECTION 703 FIRE RESISTANCE <br /> RATINGS) <br /> <br /> 703.1 General. The fire resistance rating of floors, walls, ceilings and other elements and <br /> components shall be maintained. <br /> <br /> 703.2 Maintenance. All required fire doors and smoke barriers shall be maintained in good <br /> working order, including all hardware necessary for the proper operation thereof. Fire doors shall <br /> not be held open by door stops, wedges and other unapproved hold-open devices. <br /> <br /> 703.3 Attached garages. Private garages located beneath a dwelling unit shall be separated from <br /> the dwelling unit by walls, partitions, floors and ceilings with a fire resistance rating of not less <br /> than one (1) hour. Private garages attached to a dwelling shall be completely separated from the <br /> dwelling unit, its basement and its attic area by means of one-half (1/2) inch gypsum board or <br /> equivalent applied to the garage side and taped at the joints. Doors separating garages from such <br /> dwelling units, basements or attics shall be solid core doors with a minimum thickness of one <br /> and three-eights (13/8) inches or approved equivalent door. <br /> <br /> 703.4 Barriers to fire. Fireblocking, draftstopping, fire stopping and thermal barriers required <br /> by the Building Code of University City shall be maintained. <br /> <br /> (SECTION 704 FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS) <br /> <br /> 704.2.90 Tampering. Anyone tampering or interfering with the effectiveness of a smoke <br /> detector shall be in violation of this code. <br /> <br /> 704.90 Fire suppression system. Fire suppression systems shall be in proper operating condition <br /> at all times. <br /> <br /> 704.90.1 Valves. Control valves shall be in the fully open position. <br /> <br /> 704.90.2 Sprinklers. Sprinklers shall be clean and free from corrosion, paint and damage.
