Upcoming Household Hazardous Waste Event Schedule

In 1973, University City became one of the first municipalities in the country to offer curbside recycling to its residents. Since then, the program has continued to expand.  Today, the city owns and operates its own Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), an outdoor Recycling Drop-off Center and a fleet of recycling vehicles to provide curbside and alley pickups of recyclables to all residents. The MRF is located within the garage complex at 1015 Pennsylvania Avenue. Regular operating hours are Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

A 24-hour Recycling Drop-Off Center is located at the north rear parking lot of the Heman Park Community Center (975 Pennsylvania).  The drop-off center is available every day and accepts the items listed below:

-Gift wrap paper

-Aerosol cans

-Paperback books

-Newspaper

-Magazines, catalogs

-Junk mail, posters

-Office and computer paper

-Fax paper, manila folders

-Envelopes (with or without windows)

-Plastics (#1 thru #7 - can accept items that fit into container)

-Glass bottles and jars

-Aluminum and steel/tin cans, aerosol cans (empty cans)

-Paperboard/boxboard (cereal boxes and beverage containers)

-Corrugated cardboard

-Telephone books

-Wireless cell phones

-Textiles (clothes, shoes, towels, linens, rags, curtains, table cloths and small rugs)

 

The Curbside Program has expanded!

The City collects the following items weekly:

Aluminum/tin cans, glass bottles and jars and all #1 thru #7 plastics are collected at the curbside - Empty and rinse all containers before placing in blue recycling bin.  Remove all caps and lids from plastic bottles, jugs and glass containers. Can accept smaller sized items that fit into blue bin.

Magazines, catalogs, junk mail, posters, manila folders, envelopes, fax, office and computer paper are collected at the curbside.   Envelopes are accepted with or without windows.  Items should be placed in your yellow bin along with newspaper.

Newspapers are collected at the curbside - Place in the yellow TreeSaver recycling container. Do not place plastic wrappers with newspapers.

Cardboard is collected at the curbside – Break down and flatten boxes into 3 feet by 3 feet sections and place them under or next to the blue and yellow bins/carts.  No whole boxes, boxes larger than 3 feet by 3 feet or boxes that have not been flatten will be collected.

  • Glass Bottles and Jars (clear, green, brown, blue)
  • Plastic Milk and juice containers (#1 and #2)
  • Plastic Narrow Neck containers (#3, such as health and beauty aid products, cleaners)
  • Plastic food and drink containers (#4 and #5, such as margarine tubs, drinking straws, frozen desert cups, 12-pack rings, yogurt cups, syrup and ketchup bottles)
  • Plastic Containers (#6 and #7, such as plastic tableware and Tupperware)
  • Plastic Grocery Bags
  • Plastic Buckets (clean kitty litter containers, 5 gallon maximum)
  • Corrugated Cardboard (flatten and 3 feet by 3 feet sections)
  • Chipboard and Paperboard (cereal, cake and food mix boxes, gift boxes, etc.)
  • Paper Carrier Stock (soda and beer can carrying cases)
  • Junk Mail and Envelopes
  • Paperback books
  • Telephone books
  • Office and Computer Paper
  • Fax Paper and Manila Folders
  • Notebook Paper
  • Gift wrap Paper
  • Newspaper, including inserts
  • Magazines, Catalogs, Posters

No, We Do Not Accept:

  • Window Glass
  • Dinnerware
  • Ceramics
  • Dirty Containers
  • Motor Oil
  • Insecticides or Herbicides
  • Hazardous Chemical Containers
  • Plastic Trash Bags
  • Plastic Film (plastic sheets, tarps or wrap)
  • Expanded foam or clear polystyrene
  • Waxed cardboard
  • Hard Cover Books
  • Metal Clips, Spirals or Binders
  • Styrofoam Peanuts
  • Dirt, Wood Chips or Logs

Yard Waste is collected at the curbside – Grass clippings, leaves, twigs, plants or small brush must be separated from household trash and placed in 30-gallon biodegradable paper bags (Kraft bags) with a yard waste sticker attached.  No dirt, wood chips or logs are accepted in yard waste bags.   Yard waste stickers are not required October 15th through December 31st.  During all other months, each bag must have a yard waste sticker attached.  The stickers can be purchased from local stores and are sold in packs of 5 for $5.  Click here for more information on store locations. Residents that utilize alley pickup will have yard waste collected at the front curb on Mondays.

Brush and Tree Limbs – Brush and tree limbs that are not larger than 3 inches thick will be collected at the front curb along with your regular trash.  Residents may tie brush and limbs with twine into bundles 4 feet long and 2 feet around (a maximum of 6 bundles will be collected from a single household per week) for collection on household trash collection days. Residents that utilize alley pickup will have brush and limbs (yard waste) collected at the front curb on Mondays.

Other items for collection during the year:

Holiday Trees - Residents may put their trees out for pickup during the first two weeks of January each year.  This dates of collection in 2006 are the week of January 2 - 5, and the following week, January 9 - 13th.  After that time trees should be taken to Heman Park (Parking lot near lighted ball field, off of Shaftesbury) on Saturday, January 14th and Saturday, January 21st only.

Where to recycle other items:

Motor Oil - can be recycled at any Valvoline Instant Oil Change or Jiffy Lube.

Tires - can be recycled at Amoco, 7360 Forsyth, 725-7558, for a $2 fee.

REMEMBER - Look in the City's publication, CityScape, to find newly announced recycling programs. The City often is the recipient of grants that fund temporary recycling programs.
