Bulky Item Collection: On "bulky item collection day" each household in a given area (see map and schedule below) may set out up to three large items or seven small items for collection. Certain items, however, cannot be accepted. Those include auto parts, any chemicals or hazardous waste, construction debris, railroad ties, batteries, tires or tree limbs.

  • Place from one to no more than three bulky items within three feet of curb or street pavement for collection.
  • Put discarded items out after 4 p.m. on the evening before the assigned date and before 6:30 a.m. on the assigned date. Bulky items placed out at any other time will not be collected.
  • Place only large household items out for collection. These items include appliances and furniture. The following items will not be collected: regular bagged or boxed refuse, small electronics, construction waste, building debris, business or commercial items, railroad ties, tree logs, tree stumps, tires, batteries, drum containers or chemicals.
  • Be sure that access to the items is not blocked by parked cars, trees or poles.
  • Wrap glass doors/windows with cardboard for mechanical pickup.

Pickups take place every three months only on Wednesday and Thursday. To determine your dates, locate your home on the city map below and note the area identifying letters.

Subsequent collections will occur every three months thereafter. Refer to this chart to see the dates of collection for the 2006 year.

Persons unsure of the area in which they live, the collection dates or have any questions regarding this service may call 862-6767 ext. 302.

University City is one of only a few municipalities in the St. Louis metropolitan area to own and operate its own transfer station and refuse vehicles, the Sanitation division is responsible for the collection and disposal of refuse from all homes and public institutions within the City. The division also provides for the residential collection of recyclables. Headed by Mr. Kenneth Allen, the office is located at 1015 Pennsylvania Avenue. Normal operating hours are Monday thru Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Holiday Refuse Schedule: The Sanitation division does not operate on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Trash pickup is affected only when the holiday falls on or before the normal collection day. In this event trash pickup is one day later than normal collection with a Saturday route added to maintain a five-day pickup schedule.

Yard Waste Collection: In 1992, the state of Missouri banned all yard waste from entering area landfills. To provide an environmentally sound, yet convenient and cost effective alternative, the City offers curbside collection of yard waste to all of its residents. In order for pickup, the City ordinance requires that leaves and grass by placed in brown biodegradable paper bags with a city yard waste sticker attached. No dirt, wood chips or logs are accepted in the yard bags. All brush must be tied in bundles no larger than 4' by 2' wide with branches no thicker than 3 inches in diameter. As many as twelve bags and six bundles can be picked up per household per week. For added convenience, yard waste is picked up on the same day as trash and recycling. The City also offers free pickup of Holiday trees during the month of January only.

Yard Waste Stickers: Beginning January 2000, residents will be able to order yard waste stickers by mail! Minimum order is five stickers at $1.00 each by check or money order. Just send request to City Hall, Attn: Yard Waste Stickers, and include a self-addressed return stamped envelope. The residents do not need yard waste stickers on yard bags during October 15th through December 31st.

Roll Out Carts:  Most residents in single-family homes have a roll-out cart, which the city empties once a week.  Roll-out carts should be placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m. (6:30 a.m. in the summer on collection day.)  Carts may be rolled to the curb no sooner than 5 p.m. on the day before the scheduled collection. Roll carts back behind the front building line after collection.  Please do not overload the cart.  Place all refuse in plastic bags in the cart.  Put only household waste in the cart.  An overloaded dumpster or cart will not be emptied and the resident may be ticketed. Place the cart no more than 4 feet from the curb for collection.
