Crime Prevention Unit
The Crime Prevention Unit is multi-faceted providing various services to the citizens of University City. The Unit has a Crime and Traffic Analysis function whereby statistical information is gathered to be used analytically for pro-active purposes. Statistics are also provided to Neighborhood Watch Units upon request. The Unit coordinates the Neighborhood Watch Program. Police officers provide training and assistance to interested citizens desiring to form a Watch Unit as well as maintain an effective program. Police officers attend the Watch meetings to share information and build community rapport in accordance with the Department's Community Policing Philosophy. The Nation Night Out is a yearly function of the Crime Prevention Unit where McGruff appearances and police officer visits are made to all the Watch Units. Security surveys and audits for residents and business owners can by requested. Officers survey the buildings to ensure the best possible security system is in place. Recommendations are made for locks, windows, doors, as well as the exterior. Public relations functions include speaking engagements and McGruff appearances. For additional information, call 314-505-8610. Two Victim Advocates who assist all victims of crime occurring in University City staff this Unit. Services provided are crisis intervention, information and referral, rape response, death notifications, community awareness, counseling and follow-up services. Domestic Violence Support Group Info This Unit is staffed by three police officers who provide drug and gang prevention awareness instruction to all University City public and private schools, to include junior high. The officers are assigned to the schools on a full-time basis. This program extends to the summer months with a "Youth at Risk Program for approximately 30 junior high school students. Events include drug and gang instruction, field trips, sports competition, and community service projects. For additional information, call 314-505-8684. St. Louis County currently has two Deputy Juvenile Officers headquartered at the University City Police Station.
